$14k does seem high, even for a rare manual. But, the person listing it did a great job at articulating the positives of the vehicle. It also had a ton if pictures, and pictures sell..
 
It's a clean 5sp low miles, but daaaang...

Good presentation, and I think the big reason it fetched so much money is that the timing belt service was 'conducted'. Insert meme here: "one does not simply 'do' a timing belt service".
 
The owner needs a shirt. I don’t need his sweaty back on my cloth seats.

I am not sure I would have paid over $7k for it. I have seen better.

All listings on BAT have a ton of pictures. I think they require a certain number to list an item.
 
I can see it going for north of 7K, BUT not over 9K because of the mileage. 14K is too much $$ to pay for detail products. Anyone can clean an engine bay and upholstery.
 
What no one here understands is that the type of guy paying that much for a 3rd gen doesn’t really give a shit about how much it costs. Odds are this is one of their cheaper toys. This demographic was likely the one that was too young or poor to own the truck they wanted back in 1996. They don’t really care about DIY work either. The BaT vetting process is a lot more sophisticated than craigslist as well if you’ve ever bought a car there. A PPI is always mandatory, but these are usually very loved vehicles.
 
High I suppose... But, it's a coveted '99, and a stick, west coast (likely no rust) with just 152k miles and plenty of records, while looking quite clean. Just need to find the right buyer; and apparently that happened.
 
I tend to agree with [MENTION=71030]T4R2014[/MENTION]. The person who bought this probably has money to burn. They didn't care how much it cost, they just wanted it.

But, there's also the saying, "A fool and his money are soon parted." That rig is worth no where near 14k. Woopy do, it's got a 5 speed. I bought a 98 with an e-locker, 130k and in good shape at the beginning of this year for $6500. I bought my 2000 5 years ago with 111k for $6300. The prices are definitely not going down, they're going up but 14k is a ridiculous price to pay.

I agree to some degree, but I personally own many vehicles (all Toyota/Lexus) and none of mine are even close to $14k (well, my first gen is pretty cheap) but that still does not mean I'm willing to part with my money by over paying. I still try to get good deals on my stuff, even the crap I buy to fulfill my teenage self who could not afford it in 1990. That said, I sold my 1 owner 1987 4Runner to a guy in PA two years ago for $9k..... So people spend what they want to spend.

Not unlikely. The 14k bid took place virtually right away as the ad was posted and no one else bid for the remainder of the auction.
 
just to point out the positive on this, selling for 14K gives a high point on which to sell or price our trucks. I see this as a good thing. It increases the value of all 3rd gen 4runners.

I predict that one won't last long!!! I think they may not realize what they could get for it.

These prices are only going to improve as more and more rust out or are totaled.

They are the ideal balance between simple DIY-ability and modern electronic convenience and they aren't making any more.
 
I’m very skeptical of copart vehicles. Copart is where cars go when you can’t get rid of them on the street. The guy spending 14k on a 3rd gen knows this too. I think one of the reasons why you don’t see more of these selling so high is because the owners simply aren’t aware of sites like BaT yet. They might have bought it a few years ago at 5k and thought it was only rock bottom from there. In the mean time you’ll keep finding great 3rd gen deals, but I expect a pretty dramatic change soon. It looks crazy now but once you understand these buyers it makes sense. They don’t care to DIY. They’d rather bring it to a mechanic because it’s actually cheap as hell to pay a shop to fix these compared to other cars they have.
