Beast Attacked (part two)

I took the Beast into the Dealer body shop (I previously had a good experience there).
They said it was obviously a heavy object like a screwdriver or hammer forced down and with pressure. The headlight is scratched as well. I am going to replace the chrome grille with a color keyed one {galactic grey mica}. Here are a couple pics of the injury as promised.

That took more force than a screwdriver to dent the metal like that....

Now that I see where it's at, Id suspect someone hit it with a pallet on a forklift. Probably had a large load on the front, was turning, and just clipped your hood, and it probably had a large staple or something hard sticking out, or maybe whatever was on the pallet protruded that was metal, which drug across your hood.

They had to have known they hit your Runner too. Shame those a-holes wont let you view the security tape, I bet you'd clearly see what happened. Probably a guy running over to see the damage he did, look to see if anyone noticed, then hopped back on the forklift and took off like nothing happened.

Maybe you need to go ask some questions of the fine folks that work in the area????

Also the scratch started on the left side, above the headlight, and worked it's way to the grille. If you notice, the edge of the hood is bent down where the object first hit, it drug across the lower part of the hood just scratching paint, then when it hit the raised center section, it dug in harder, denting the metal, until it got back on a flat surface, then off the hood and across the grille.

So that would be a forklift driving towards the front of your Runner, making a right turn, and catching the LF corner of their pallet or object on the pallet on your hood, or a forklift with it's passenger side facing the front of your Runner, backing up turning to the left, and it's RF corner of the pallet or object on the pallet scraping your hood.

ahh. thanks. that would make sense since the dent surprised me.....I will mention that to the security people as well. good call. the question is what was a forklift doing in the second row of cars where access to the loading dock was a straight shot from the 1st row? however it happened you are absolutely correct that it took a lot of force. thanks again.

Hahaha, I just like reading clues left behind to try and figure out the sequence of events that took place. I'm not good enough to be a CSI though....

And yes, odd that a forklift would be in that area. No telling sometimes, maybe it was someone just being an idiot and they screwed up by not being where they were supposed to be.

yes indeed Karma should cover that one. It is also a little frustrating as if it was a collision my deductible is $250. but if comprehensive my deduct is $50. so I cannot press my insurance ot investigate though I would love to see those tapes... it's an old fashioned town in many ways Turlock and I am there only for a few weeks helping out in the hospital....would love to "chat" with the dweeb who did this and looked the other way........excited about getting the color key grill. the body shop is a good one (dealer) so I am hopeful it all looks new again. thanks again for the insightful posts.

Stopped at Toyota today where my 4runner is and they said they would NOT total it. Seems they have machines at this dealership that straightens out frames etc. I'm pretty upset right now so have to rethink what I'm going to do. Even though the hitch is on the cross member where hitch is/was that part of the frame is not considered vital. And of course they give you the BS that once you drive a new vehicle off the lot it's no longer new.

Get an attorney with teeth. If the driver of the vehicle who hit you was drunk plan to sue him, his insurance or your own if he was not insured.In addition, get the accident report from the police ASAP.

Glad you are okay, Hoggy; as it could have been much, much worse. Let's just hope that your "uninsured motorist" coverage kicks in and that you have enough of it. Here in VA, we have so many people driving without insurance (both illegal immigrants and US citizens who don't feel like paying) that it is all but necessary to carry the extra coverage. It runs about $15 or $20 a year and is worth every penny - in my opinion.

I was rear-ended (much less of a degree) in my 2005 4Runner in January of 2006. A man in an overloaded Dodge Ram truck crashed 25 to 30 mph into a stopped Lexus RX SUV and pushed it into my stopped 4Runner. The Ram was pretty messed up, but still driveable. The Lexus was crushed badly in the back - so much so that his hatch would not open - and its front bumper was all bashed in where it hit my 4Runner.

All that happened to my 4Runner was that the rear bumper cover needed replacing (about $500 parts and labor billed to the Ram driver's insurance company). This is a testament to body-on-frame construction and the rugged design of the 4Runner. My son and I were both fine, as were the other two drivers.

But anyway, I hope they do end up deciding to "total" your truck and you can purchase another one. This should probably be up to your insurance company (I would assume) rather than the dealership. Once that kind of collision damage gets entered into a giant database somewhere and is available on a Carfax report, nobody in their right mind will ever want to buy your used 4Runner.

Thankfully, you walked away. Cars can be fixed a lot easier than humans! Just to be safe, get a medical evaluation.

Been there, tried that. I had my SEMA show car (Prelude) near totaled by drunk Amigo without insurance. I asked attorney whether I should sue this clown, he said I'd waste time and money if it goes to court because these type of people have no bank account or any property that could be foreclosed. He said all I can do is have him arrested for DUI, which I did. Next day dude was hanging out at local Burger King, I guess county jail was full or they didn't want to feed wothless POS. Back to damaged car though, my insurance paid $10,000 to repair it and then doubled my premium 6 month later (so much for fairness). Just send your Police Report to your Insurance company and ask them to pursue this Taurus driver on their own. Trust me - You do not want to waste your time on this freaker.

agree in the sense that people who don't care have few assets. but on the other score getting the vehicle totaled with the very good arguments here should not be an issue for an attorney in the final disposition of the case. the insurance company trims a little here and gives a little more there. get a CT at intervals of 1 2 and 3 months just to show you mean business. FUC 'em. they are more than happy to do the same to Us.

I may just trade it in at this Toyota dealer for another new one and try to make up the difference in diminished value of a trade in without ever being in a accident and one that's had frame damage. Which of course for me would be the difference of the trade in. I have a couple of options but won't know more until later this week. I'll try to keep you guys on the forum informed.

Not sure what your insuarance is, but it's not up to the dealer to total the car but the insuarance adjuster. Of course the dealer doesnt' want total it, they want to fix it so the can stick the bill to your insuarance.

I had a SOB brake in front of me on the highway going 75 three days ago. I couldn't stop in time but was able to swerve just in time to cut off the guy to my right. He was driving a POS and I think he was looking to be set for life in insurance money. Saw a 20yr old driving a nice car and playing with the radio and decided, screw it. There was no reason for him to stop. The guy who I cut off later pulled up next to me and gave me a big thumbs up. F*CKER.

Looks like it's gonna fall to underinsured motorist. Because the guy probably doesn't have insurance or anything of value my insurance company is going to get by as cheaply as they can. If he had insurance it would probably be easier for me to a new vehicle. Whichever way it goes I do NOT want this truck back. I've been with Farmer Insurance for close to 40 years so we'll find out if that means anything for being a loyal customer all this time.

Rear ends me at a stop light. He was passed out at the wheel and the witness said she was clocking him at 60mph when he struck me without so much as touching the brakes. I do believe the spare tire and truck frame the 4runner has saved my life. Now I have to fight to try to get it totaled. It's gonna be close. He was driving a Taurus which needless to say is totaled. No matter what, I think it's goodbye to my 4runner and another is in the future. I may decide on a V8 this time but really not sure I like the idea of full time 4wd. Wear and tear plus gas mileage would be factors of full time 4wd.

WOW! At least your ok. Good luck with the insurance, my friend had a brand new F-150(under 8k miles), aftermarket lift kit, grill, rims and tires and went head on with an 18 wheeler (appox 30mph). Well you can imagine what the truck looked like. The 18 wheeler crossed into the wrong lane.

The engine was turned about 45 degrees, it was a 4 door and the rear doors didn't shut. The dash was pushed up, the radio even fell out and the floor was crumpled.

The insurance company says "it can be fixed". So he was pissed, because he new it will never be the same. After weeks/months of going back and fourth he finally got them to total it. What a nightmare! The othe problem was they only paid book value so hit took a hit in wallet, but was able to find a leftover same exact color and model.

I know it's gonna cost me. Hell, that's the story of my life and it wasn't even my fault. Happens all the time to others too so I know I'm in a pretty big club. As everyone says "at least your alright" and yes that's the really BIG one. When it's all said and done though I'm still pi--ed.

That will be a really big hit if they pay me book value. I bought a new 2007 when the 2008's are out. Sure I got the $1800 rebate but that was in the price of the vehicle. I forgot about that. I may come out much worse than I thought. Not worried about being off work but am worried of losing my job. There being only 4 of us and them getting one short is not going to be a good thing if they get really busy, which they're suppose to get soon. I'm not suppose to go back to work until ALL the pain is gone. I am still hurting some right now so I'm waiting a couple more days to see how I feel before going back.

Uninsured and Underinsured motorist coverage only kick in to pay for injuries or death when someone who is liable for your damages has little or no insurance. Has nothing to do with paying for your collision damages. On the other hand since it's a brand new car you more than likely have collision coverage which will pay for repairing the 4runner. You'll have to also pay your deductible since it has to be resolved under your own policy.

Some insurers waive deductibles if you're not at fault. And once you're paid off (repairs or totaled) it's up to the insurance company to pursue the other party for reimbursement. If he has no insurance or other assets to speak of they may not pursue him at all.

You pay your insurance company premiums so it's their job to take care of you and make you happy. If things don't go your way tell them you have 2 words for them "BAD FAITH". That usually gets the insurance companies off their butts and working for you like they should be in the first place.
