16's or 17's

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum I just bought my first 4runner its a 3rd Gen 4wd I am needing new tires and wheels. I was wondering what are your opinions should I go 16's or 17's I have stock suspension (will be doing a lift in about a year or so). I know what tires I am going with the BFG TA's I am just here looking for some info.

P.s I know tire size has been beat to death on the forum so the question is not tire size but wheel size.

Both have been beaten to death.
 
So assuming the same overall tire size, 17s will give you less sidewall. This leads to better street manners - less room for the tire to squish when you corner leads to less leaning of the vehicle, and less leaning means better traction. If you are a race car driver or won't ever take your vehicle off pavement, go with the 17s. However, once you get on dirt (or even very rough pavement), the 16s give you more sidewall which means the tires soak up the bumps better, and give you more room to air down which improves the ride even further.

So it's a question of where your priorities are.
 
I wouldn't call 1/2" more sidewall (since only the bottom half actually has any weight on it) a LOT more.

One thing that will make a difference is load range. Many of the 17" tires in larger sizes are only available as a light truck tire in load range E, meaning a stiff sidewall. Not necessarily applicable in the OPs case, but it's something to consider.
 
I went from a 16 to a 17 keeping the same tire size and I felt a better ride quality. Probably because I put quality tires on. But I didn't notice a bumpier ride off road. Another thing to consider is a 17 will better fit tundra brakes if you ever wanted to go that route. Some 16s fit over them but not all. You'd have to look in the tbu thread.
 
I went with 16's and i like discounttiredirect.com they will match prices and often times beat others prices. I just ordered my new Duratracs 265/75/16 for $700 shipped to my door with a 40 dollar rebate so $660 when its said and done.
 
I like my 17" but everyone has there own opinion.

16s are slightly less likely to get scratched on the trail.

Or to put it another way, 17s, 18s, 20s, get scratched worse than 16s on the trail. LESS RUBBER!
