17 4R TRD Pro - rear drivers door rattle

Hey Guys/Gals, I want to see if anyone else has experienced this and I couldn't find anything on the forum matching what I am experiencing.

So, I took the TRD to Colorado this weekend, we had it loaded down pretty good with bikes and gear. It was obvious sitting a little lower than normal. After the first day of just highway driving, we noticed that on acceleration or acceleration over bumpy paved terrain, there seemed to be a rattle coming from rear drivers side door or just underneath. Passenger confirmed rattle coming from that area. We shook the door back and forth while stopped, definitely nothing rattling inside door. I haven't noticed it since the car has been unloaded but today is my first day back so I am still listening for it. Thoughts?

Check the rear shock reservoir is not contacting the truck body/fender. I have read a few of the members' mount was loose or had the mount/reservoir slightly contacting the undercarriage. If that's the case the dealer will make the adjustment or modification needed.

cool, I have read about the reservoir making contact but this really sounded like it was coming from the door even with someone sitting back there and listening. I know how noises can resonate though so I will check this... It also makes sense that it would be more pronounced if it was loaded down.

Did the passenger have something in the door pocket, then removed it after the trip? This has gotten me a couple times.

A water bottle placed in the door pocket will rattle up a storm. I have to shove a neoprene coozie in with it to prevent the rattle.

I'll agree.. I have had mine for 2 weeks now and can not figure out where it's coming from.

Ok thanks, I will check that as well... FWIW, I was rinsing all the bugs off of it last night and I did notice that the reservoir had some marks on it where it was making contact with the body. I also noticed that it did not have the same clearance as the passenger side...

That is exactly what it sounded like to me, is something in the door pocket, but he had taken everything out of the door and it was still making the noise...

I am dealing with this same noise

New to the forum and have found tons of great info on here. I am dealing with this same issue on my '17 pro. It is at the shop right now hopefully being resolved. Apparently the port put the wrong bracket on the drivers side rear reservoir. The frame is touching on mine right now. They showed me the service bulletin showing what not to do and there is a pretty clear difference in the brackets between he drivers and passenger side. Did you ever figure out the noise? Was it the reservoir?

This is your problem 99.9%. I had the same and delaer has to make some adjustments to my reservoir.

I just installed TRD resi shocks on mine and the left one rubs. Distinct sound that echoes through the body but can isolate sound to said shock. Will post pics and (fingers crossed) follow up to a quiet ride.

Just got back from the dealer and was told there is nothing that they can do for me at this time.

It actually sounds worse after being at the dealer. It only made the noise every now and again before I dropped it off. Now it makes it with every bump.

From what the service guys said The rear reservoir was installed with the incorrect bracket at the port which it why it is touching the frame. The problem is the correct bracket isn’t in the toyota parts catalog and they said they can’t order since it “doesn’t” exist hence the “there is nothing we can do for you right now”

I called toyota corporate and am supposed to be contacted tomorrow by a case manager.

So frustrating. It’s a brand new car that has 160 miles on it and didn’t develop the noise until after we took it home.

Attached is the pic I took of the service bulletin showing the correct brackets as well as my shock reservoir.

The black tape is the “sound insulating” tape the service guys put on. The problem is it does nothing since where they put the tape doesn’t touch.

So funny I found this post today. My truck has done this since day one of pickup. It was so intermittent I wasn't certain what it was. I even took it in for service but they of course found nothing. Today while crawling around and remembering that all trd parts are installed in port, I thought I wonder... Then It occurred to me how close the body was to the rear shock reservoir. I will report back when my useless service department gives their take. What a ridiculous problem on a brand new truck..

There putting a lot of faith in that one bolt as well. 3 holes, only one bolt. I'm sure that's fine though...
The tape job is so pathetic it's not even funny, just sad.
I'm sure corporate can get you moving again rattle free.

can't you just loosen the bolt on the bracket, slide the reservoir down 3/8 - 1/2" and tighten the bracket bolt again? This is a 2 minute fix

I think you're done with your local toyota's problem solving. That's ridiculous.
Other fixes I've seen include trimming the fender lining a bit more

The reservoir has a lip and the bracket is notched so it stays in one spot and doesn’t move.

Yeah they don’t inspire much confidence. Luckily the local dealer is not who I bought it from and there are a ton of dealers that are still “local” to me.

Yeah they don’t inspire much confidence. Luckily the local dealer is not who I bought it from and there are a ton of dealers that are still “local” to me.

ahhh. I see. Thanks for the clarification.
I also think it's a shitty deal, and I agree with you 100%.
