17 inch wheels on 2012 4Runner Limited

I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a new 4Runner limited. I am leaning towards the limited over the trail because of the multi-mode 4wd. I am not crazy about the stock tires on the limited, and ironically, there are not a lot of choices for tires in size 245/60-20. There are a lot more choices in tires for the 265/70-17 that is on the Trail 4runner.

I'm wondering if I bought the limited, can I put on 17" inch wheels? What are the advantages/disadvantages of going with this?

there really are no differences between wheel size other than they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. But smaller wheels are better at offroading because they can be deflated and then grab things better (get better traction).:cowboy:
 
A Limited rolls just fine on 17's ... Mine has the 17 inch TRD rims with Cooper Discoverer ATP tires.

Overall O.D. is uneffected by wheel size. The difference is made up by side wall height.
17" wheels (actually 16") are preferred because the amount of sidewall is dramatically increased over a 20" wheel.
More sidewall equals lower tire pressure and more wheel protection. With larger sidewalls however, I suggest considering "E Load" tires for more protection against rocks and sidewall failure.
20" wheels (less sidewall) better on road performance and handling.
Seems counter intuitive for a 4x4 but most spend their lives on pavement.
 
i'm picking up my new 2012 SR5 this Thursday with 17" wheels. I'd rather have the Limited wheels on mine....

Hi. Thanks for sharing your info about your 17s. I was wondering if the Limited has a less jarring, bouncy ride with the 17s compared to the stock 20s. Willing to sacrifice some handling for a more comfortable ride. Thanks !

I personally didn't find any material difference except for slightly worse cornering with the 17s. Not worth it in my opinion unless you just want to save money or availability of a certain wheel is an issue.
 
SR5 on limited

I have the SR5 wheels on my limited, a P metric tire would be softer but probably add some body roll in the corners. I have a C load LT which makes the ride almost identical and I have all the tire choices I want. Before it gets asked, no difference in gas mileage for me.

There are plenty of threads on here about tire size and rubbing. The answer is yes you will most likely rub with 285s. Some guys get them to fit without rubbing (with sorcery IMO). You will most likely have to trim the front bumper and move the fender liner forward and possibly a body mount chop.

Very kind of you considering a 9 year old thread and the member he quoted hasn't posted for 5 years.
 
Yeah I figured as much. I have a 2010 LE so I know my bumper comes down quite a bit lower than the other 5th gen models.
