18" Limited Wheel Defect??? W/ Picture

Hello, I searched the topic and didn't find anything. I have a 2008, 65k and I live in FL. A couple of my wheels have been doing this for a while but I just got back to FL after not seeing the truck for 2 years (I'm stationed overseas) and it has gotten way worse. Anyone else have this issue and did Toyota do anything?

All my 05 sr5 wheels did that...I just got new wheels, problem solved. Not sure the cause but I feel like rust has something to do with it

I'm at work right now so pictures won't load, but I'm assuming you've got the same peeling finish on your limited wheels I've got. Mine's an '06 and the wheels are all starting to peel, and it seems to start right at the edge between the spokes and the inner and outer wheel. I'm not sure what can be done about it, but I'm not happy and I don't plan on buying new wheels. Maybe I'll just plasti-dip them...

I've read that it's actually a common problem with Toyota wheels in general, not just limited to the 4Runner. My truck lives in the Northeast, but I wash it religiously in the winter and never leave salt/sand stuck to it. I'd say it's just shoddy craftsmanship on the wheels...looks horrible.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have bought dozens of sets of aftermarket wheels in my life but these are actually factory wheels I like and don't want to replace. I thought they were aluminum wheels so it must be a defect in the finish. Maybe in the future I'll get them stripped and powder coated graphite. I plan on keeping this 4Runner forever.

Yeah, it's a common problem with the finish. My new-to-me 2008 4R has it going on. Our 2004 Sienna is really bad.

Aluminum doesn't rust, it oxidizes. My guess is that the aluminum was not properly prepped prior to paint and clear coat. The OEM wheels on my '05 Sport Edition had 97k miles on them when I swapped them for aftermarket. No problems whatsoever. Thus it's possible that Toyota just had a really big, bad batch.. Who knows.

This is why you need to wash the inside portion of the wheel brake dust will destroy the finish on any wheel aftermarket or factory. I pitted up a set of nice aftermarket alloys on my 2nd gen when I was younger and my older buddy who worked at a local tire store told me that is was caused by the brake dust, road contaminants and dirt from not being washed regularly. Toyota's are not the only factory wheel I have seen do this many alloy wheels from the factory do this.

I have an extra set of the 17" wheels that I bought on Craig's and they have the oxidation, however my original wheels on the runner are still good (knock on wood). I've plasti dipped my 2nd Gen wheels, but they didn't have this issue. I think looking into powder coating them may be the best solution.

This was the case when I bought my used 2006. I didn't question it much because I had just figured someone scraped them up a bit and this was their half-assed attempt and making it look better. Interesting to know it was either a defect with these rims and/or lack of care to the wheels.

Yes, my 06 SE, with 6 spoke rims, is corroding quite well. Being in Ohio, I basically understand it. Everything rusts/corrodes here.

But... While shopping for this 4runner, i was intrigued by the fact that some vehicles, that were obviously rusty elsewhere on the body/frame had OE rims that were in excellent condition. Yet others, including the one I purchased, were very well cared for and had no rust anywhere on the body, yet the rims are corroding badly. Odd.......

I just figure Toyota had a lot of bad runs of rims. I'm currently seeking maybe some nice Limited rims. In the meanwhile I may replace 1-2 of the bad ones I have just to get them off the truck

Just get them powdercoated. I've had my pc wheels for 4 years with zero issues.

Mine are the same way. Before I get new tires this fall, I'll be getting the wheels refinished.
