Howdy Folks!
So we've got an 08 (Ltd/4wd/v8) with the 18" wheel option - like so many people our paint has bubbled up / flaked, we tried to get some kind of resolution back when it first started happening, but the car was OOW, and it was taking so much time pursuing this through corporate channels, I just said, to hell with it, I'll do something myself later.
So it's finally later
At some point I'll probably do some FN or TRD Pro wheels, step up the tire size, but since the current tires are still in excellent shape, I figured I'd DIY the 18"-ers.
So first of all, I need to get the old paint off. I'd prefer to avoid chemicals, and I was *hoping* to do this with the tire still mounted, so I could do one at a time in the driveway.
I'm I correct that a soda blaster setup - as opposed to a sandblaster - is mild enough that doing it with the tires mounted isn't a problem? I even read that people have soda blasted parts right on the car, don't know if that's an option with the wheels (any concern over the brakes getting blasted, rubber lines, etc?)
I've got some other jobs that I could use it for as well, so thinking of just making the fairly cheap investment in a blaster setup.
I want to go black with the wheels, but again, would like to avoid having the truck down like for powder-coating, so I'm thinking maybe a plastidip. Just not sure on the prep following a soda blaster paint removal (assuming that's the option I use).
Short version: trying to remove the old, flaking paint, then paint/plastidip the OEM wheels black, with the least possible downtime.
