That's amazing there are that many different brands with similar issues..I wonder if some people don't even notice it..I seriously doubt that my wife would..

Continuing to monitor the "shudder", noticed it a bit driving home yesterday and then again this morning on my way into work. For reference my trip each way is about 7 miles.

What I've observed is that at the point in the pedal travel where I'm feeling the shudder it's almost like there is a flat spot in the acceleration. I'm going to disconnect the PC to see whether that makes a difference and then planning to make another trip back to the dealership, can't really say if it's gotten worse, but I'm definitely noticing it which in my mind is not good.

So I wanted to follow up. I took my 2010 Trail to the dealer. They confirmed the shudder between 30-45 (and 40-50 as well) as the torque converter.

He was a straight shooter, said that they don't do trans flushes there, but they do at another Toyota Dealer.

I took it to that Dealer, did the full flush (important: not just a fluid exchange or change), and 2 days later I have no shudder. It was happening multiple times a day prior to that.

I will come back and let you know if it resurfaces -- but I knew how to reproduce it before, and couldn't do it for the last two days. Very hopeful, and might be worth the $300 gamble for you guys.

I have had the same issue with my 4R for a little while now. Here's my story. Mine is a 2011 Limited with 14x,xxx miles. I've owned it for about a year now. Same exact issue as far as not happening all the time, no shudder over about 50. I've spent about 8-10 hours personally under the vehicle checking U-joints, suspension mounts, basically anything and everything that moves or shouldn't move but might have worked itself loose. Finally after beating my head over the issue, I took mine into the 'stealership'. I took them for a test drive and replicated the issue for them multiple times. The way that I get mine to 'shudder' is by driving like a grandma. Very light on the gas while cruising in the 25-40 mph range. They looked it over and said it could possibly be the drive shaft being out of balance. They removed the rear driveshaft and drove it that way (AWD, so it can drive with just the front wheels). They still made the problem occur. They told me it's the torque converter and quoted me over $2,000 to replace it. So I parked the vehicle and have been riding my CBR for basically the entire summer. I got tired of riding there for about a week and drove the 4R and it seemed to have went away, but after a day or so the shudder came back. I think there's something to the torque converter idea.





Similar to yours, when I put the vehicle in 4S the problem is less pronounced. If you look at the graph, when in 4S, the acceleration Flex Lock-up is off, but the Deceleration Flex Lock-up is still on. I believe that is why the issue seems less pronounced. Like I said, my issue seems to happen the most, not when I am accelerating heavily, but when cruising and being very light on the gas (basically trying to up the fuel economy). I think that while being so light on the pedal, it is really difficult to tell whether the vehicle is actually accelerating or decelerating. Unfortunately for me, my vehicle is out of warranty. Yours isn't, I dunno, it just seems like the most likely possibility to me from my experience. I'm currently saving up to take mine to our trusted family mechanic to have the TC replaced and while he's in there flush the Trans and replace the filter because, why not? Definitely interested in what happens with your situation.

I have a bit of a shudder as well, but it only started once I installed the PC. Every time
I turn off the PC or unplug it, shudder goes away. Hopefully that solves the issue you’ve been chasing.

Try the transmission flush

It worked for me. I'm 1500-2000 miles on it, haven't felt it once since.

Make sure it's a full flush, and that you do it at a toyota dealership (not all of them will do a full flush either, most of them will just do a fluid change)

Have you ever checked issues with the emergency brake system? I once had mine inadvertently turned on and it caused shuddering at speeds up to 50 mph. May be unrelated, but worth checking.

Never checked the e-brake, but I don't think it has anything to do with it. This is definitely in the drivetrain. What's interesting is over time I've actually gotten accustomed to it and don't even really notice it any more. From everything I've read, and in talking to the tech at the dealer it's just the way the trannys in the 4runners feel and not a symptom of anything wrong.

I just asked a Honda and Toyota master mechanic. He said the shudder is due to the transmission fluid needing to be changed out.

Definitely get your tranny fluid exchange. I had a the rumble strip issue, dealer said the torque converter was toast and would be $2900 to replace it. I had them do a full fluid exchange the problem went away completely after driving for a couple days.

I'm in the same boat now. 2018 TRD Pro always kept up on maintenance. 96K miles. Shudder started last week Feb 14, between 20-40mph.

My extended warranty expired Feb 7.

t's in Toyota Katy today and they said it's the Torque Converter / Tranny needs to be replaced = $6k.

Keep reading about the tranny flush, but doesn't seem like a long term fix on here from what I have seen...

This sucks.. I had a 05 Tacoma new that I put 250K miles and never any problems. But it was a manual tranny.
