I have a 1984 4runner. I tried using some carb cleaner, thinking that it would help the carb. But after I did that the engine started running at high RPM's and then it would jump to a higher rpm, then drop down, and eventually lower and then dies. I start it up again, it does the same thing. I cleaned out the egr valve, and changed the plugs. No difference. I don't find any vacuum leaks, and I don't know what else it could be. I wonder if I would do better to just remove all these crazy vacuum lines, and block up the openings. Not sure what direction to go. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like you have a jet issue. As if the low idle jet is clogged. It's been a while since I had monkeyed with carbs but I would start there as I'm sure your problem is there.
Take the jets out and run it through a ultra sonic cleaner. Sometimes a particulate can shoot through them so fast it can score the metal and mess up the spray too so may have to replace them.

Hey man check out my post from a few months ago. It sounds like you are having very similar problems to the ones I had. I posted videos of it, so watch those and let me know.
For me after spending weeks trying to figure it out, I replaced the igniter and it finally solved the problem. Hopefully this helps.
