Just joined, I have an 87' 4Runner that I've been working on for about three years now. It is a 22re 5spd standard no SR5. I put an 85' solid front axle in it with an All-Pro sas kit and 6" springs. I rebuilt the front axle but left the stock carrier and axles in it untill I break them for an upgrade. I put an Aussie locker in the rear and 5:29 gears front and rear. It sits on 35" Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. I have a second transfercase ready to go in. I am currently working on the rear fender cut outs and installing 4x4 Inovations rock sliders. I'm a member of a couple other sites and I just found this one.

Rust Issue on my '87 4 Runner
New to this site. I am the single owner of a GREAT white 1987 4 Runner, 2-dr, SR5, standard with only 82,000 miles!!! I live in NY and (obviously) do not drive to work and use public trtansportation most of the time. I drive every 2-3 wks. on errands, etc. Great, like new interior (really), but with no bells or whistles. Top has never been off-no leaks,and loving maintenance through the years. HOWEVER, although I park it in covered parking, rust has appeared along the edge of rear wheel wells and now also (barely) visible along one front wheel well. What to do? My mechanic says about three-inch strip all along rear wheel panels must be cut away, and one front panel over wheel replaced. Then there will be the issue of the white paint not matching. The price quoted was $1800+. Any one out there have any advice? I am a female and know nothing about how progressive the rust will advance but do understand it is like a cancer and will spread, but if I keep it as dry as possible, can it last a few more years? It runs like a top!

Welcome to the forum! Can you post pictures of the rust?
Body work is expensive. It takes time to fix it right. But always get a couple quotes from different shops to compare.
To do it cheap is to sand, bondo and paint, and to do it right depending on how bad it is, is to cut out the rust and weld in a new panel.
