Hey Folks,
I'm picking up a new rig this week. I've narrowed it down to 2 'yotas. I found a 1988 Runner V6, needs an engine replacement, Basically a tow away rig, but its clean, good top interior nice. its been garaged for a project for 6 years. I don't mind doing the engine. The other is a FJ 60, I like them both. You guys want to weigh in on the benefits/ problems with each? preferences? I had a 3rd gen runner and loved it, love the 1st gen too, would be my first Cruiser.

It just depends on what you want. With the runner the smart thing to do would be to bolt in a 3.4 v6. I love fj60s but it will be way less power than if you put a 3.4 in the runner

Just depends on personal preference. Land Cruisers make cool expedition vehicles. Tons of space, solid front axle, large aftermarket support.

The 4runner is gonna do better on fuel, and the toplessness and hard edged bodies are the main drawing points of the 1st gen. The sole reason I bought a 1st gen 4runner was to take the top off.

Neither have any speed to speak of with the factory engines. The 60 series has a larger 4.2 straight-six, but it's a much heavier vehicle.

If you have the equipment and necessary skills to swap in a 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE), the 1st gen 4runners have loads of power when so-equipped.

Whether you'll need to swap a trans depends. If the 4runner is currently a manual 3.0 V6, that will make it easier; I believe the R150 in them accepts the 3.4 just fine. The 3.0 automatic should take the 3.4 as well, the autos were all A340's for a while.

If it's a 4 cylinder, the swap wouldn't be quite as easy.

If the FJ60 is in "turn-key" condition right now, that'll obviously be easier.

Do you want a topless lighweight beach cruiser? A big FJ60 that seats 5 comfortably?

Thanks for the input!, Do I need to swap the transmission if I wind up putting in the 3.4l?

Depends on what's in the 4Runner. What motor and trans are in it now?

The short answer to your OP is, the 60 is obviously bigger than the 4Runner, and is going to be a little more rugged in the suspension. The F series motor in the Cruiser is approximate to the 22RE or 3VZE depending on year and won't get you anywhere very fast, but makes crazy torque for a gasser. 60 parts will be more expensive, and it has a bigger aftermarket. 60 series Cruisers are awesome, and if I'm ever forced to go to a four door, it'll probably be for a 60 or 80.

That's a 1st gen 4Runner, though, and the top comes off, which makes it completely and undeniably superior to any other Toyota 4WD except maybe a 40 series. Maybe.
