1989 3.0 ticking sound

Getting some noise coming from drivers rear of engine and hoping you guys can help me diagnose it. Have pulled the plug wires from each cylinder to see if it may be rod knocking and no difference in sound. I also held a tissue to the exhaust to see if it is sucking in for a valve being stuck and it isn't sucking in. Have researched quite a bit and not coming up with anything.

I think it is an exhaust leak but not overly familiar with this engine. There was a loose nut in the area on the exhaust manifold that I retightened which could have caused the gasket to get burnt up and not seat right. Could may be loud injectors or loose valves possibly?

I get that same noise on mine! But it is intermittent and maybe happens every 5 seconds or so and lasts for 1-2 seconds! I would say valves like what ^^^^said but like mine it is louder under the truck so who knows.

I was told not to worry about it to much unless it gets worse but if I dont like it try switching to a heavier weight oil.

Or you can try that lucas oil stabilizer stuff. When I used it on mine it had everything quiet in the motor for about 7k miles and 2 oil changes with only one use of the stuff

Yeah thinking more and more its a loose valve myself but appreciate the feedback. I am running 10w-40 thru it but could maybe jump it up to 20w and see since its always warm here don't have to worry about it being too thic . Was wanting to seafoam it but may give that Lucas treatment a try to at least give me some time before I rip into it to adjust the valves.

My Runner was doing the exact same thing. Annoying as hell. I tore into mine and all my clearances were within tolerance, so my only guess I had left were stretched valves. I went ahead and bought a remanufactured engine from Oregon Motors for $2,000 since the stealership wanted $1500 just to do the valves, and that engine was about to let go anyhow. Constantly felt like I was trying to pull a semi trailer on top of the valve tick

Also it could be crank bearing going out.

I would assume that it would be a lot louder with engine failure but its a toyota so we all know how that goes...
