I have a 1990 4runner, the vehicle runs mint, however the AC unit does not work. When i have the fan on, and push the AC button, the little green light on the button does not light up. I have replace the AC belt but that has done nothing. What could be the possible problem with it? Where should i start? Thanks for your help

I've used recharge kits from wall mart before that are fairly cheap although never on a 4runner. Mine doesn't have A/C.

If anything, recharging the A/C can be used as a sort of diagnostic. If the A/C does work for awhile and then quit again than it's leaking. If the A/C doesn't work after you charge it than you may need a new compressor.

Tell us how it turns out.

I will try the recharge kit, but i still do not know why the AC light on the button does not light up, it does not sound or feel like the AC comes on when i press the button

Do you have a sight glass? If so, check it out. If not, you might have to bring it to a mechanic to check. A/C systems are fairly easy to diagnose and repair, but only if you have the proper tools.

Speaking from past A/C experience, not really 4R system experience...

Make sure the charge is within spec. Not too high, not too low. There are pressure switches in the lines that will shut the entire system down if not within spec.

Check your fuses.

Try to hotwire the compressor and see if you can get the clutch to activate without pressing the button.

The service manual should have a very nice troubleshooting flow chart in it for the a/c system. That would be a VERY good place to start if you can get your hands on one.

Good luck!

Thanks for everyones input, i have futher looked into, I got the AC button light to come on, The fuse for the AC relay was completely missing. I put a new one in and now the light comes on. I removed the AC belt because is was completely toasted. I will get a new one tomorrow and put it on and see if i have any cold air, if not, i will then investigate into the refrigerant system. Thanks again

The worn out belt may be a clue here. Try to see if you can turn the compressor by hand. If the compressor seized then it would wear the belt out.

The missing fuse is also interesting. Maybe whoever pulled the fuse did so because the compressor was seized and they didn't want the compressor to engage any more.

This may seem a bit twisted but I actual feel like a detective collecting clues here and I find it to be quite entertaining.

You system is R12 FREON if it was never converted to R134. It is impossible to buy R12 without a refridgeration license and lots of $. Do NOT use the R12 substitutes - more trouble than they are worth. If your compressor is good but the system is empty of FREON - check with a dealer and see if SSC #1 was done on your expansion valve. If not they will replace the valve, some O rings and recharge for FREE. Check www.alldata.com for the special service bulleting. It cover 90-like 93. I had it done couple years ago on my '90.

I have some cans of R12 Freon if you need them. No license required;):

Well i have some more information for you guys, I replaced the belt and put everything back together. Now when i put the blower fan on and then Press the AC button, it will light up for a second and then the fuse will blow. Now when i had the AC fuse in before i had the belt on, i could turn the blower fan on and then press the AC button and the little green light would stay on, but now with the belt on there, the fuse will blow. So I dont know if there is a short some where or if there is to much of a load on it and that is causing the fuse to blow or what. Should i try sticking in a large Amp fuse and see if it will run for a little bit longer? Thanks for your help

"Should i try sticking in a large Amp fuse and see if it will run for a little bit longer?"

Only if you want to set vehicle on fire or burn out the wiring --- check the owner's manual or fuese cover to make sure you have right size fuse. Sounds like there is problem with wiring to electric activated compressor clutch or the clutch its self. That shouldn't be too difficult to find.

that lil ac button pops out
if u pop it out and bring it to toyota and get a new one might work
maybe something wrong with the button too

Well i think i have found out what the problem is, i believe that the AC compressor is siezed up. I got the AC button light to stay on but it did not blow any cold air. So i ran the fan without the ac on, but the new belt that i put on was slipping(screaching sound) and then it finally gave way and broke. I am assuming that the compressor pully was not turning because it was siezed up and the belt just burnt itself up. Does this sound like it would be the AC compressor? Thanks again

similar issue

Hi, so I was reading through this issue. Glad you got it fixed but as something similar looking for answers:
compressor has freon and works if i hot wire it to the battery (blows cold)
light turns on in the cab with the a/c relay however compressor doesn't kick over

Can someone help with this issue? i don't have a multimeter handy for the tracing of the cable. Not to sure if i should grab a recharge kit on the case of adding too much... previously it was r12 and now converted and redid the lines for r134

I am in a similar boat here. 1992 v6 that the AC doesn't work. The belt is fine, the AC light does turn on. I am thinking of overhauling the system. But, does anyone know if the new compressors are R12 or R134a? See the link as an example. Assuming that there are no leaks in the hoses, etc, is there anything else I should need to replace and have the unit professionally charged?
