AC Blower Adventures!

Hey folks,

I have read through the forum quite a bit, have tried the remedies, and am now on my last option.

Yesterday, my AC blower wouldn't turn on. Not at all.

Today I pulled the fan and turned the AC on high to see that the voltage at the plug was 13.3v. Odd. I removed the fan completely (stock unit), cleaned it, and plugged it into a bench battery- the fan worked just fine.

I then figured, maybe its the resistor? I swapped it, and I think got a bad one that showed only 6.4V at the flan plug site when installed and settings on max.

After putting the original resistor back in after having cleaned it, the fan magically turned on for a minute, then when I went to change the speed it shut off and did NOT come back on.

All fuses related to the AC blower have been replaced.

My best guess is that the HVAC control unit has gone out? I have ordered a secondhand one to plug in and see if that's my issue. In the meantime, my fan is being switched on and off by my fused 6-gang switch panel lol.


Have any of y'all had to deal with this before? It is the only logical next piece of the puzzle that I could think of!

My 2008 4runner is on it's third blower motor......

They wear out.....by developing a dead spot on the rotor. Therefore.....sometimes work, sometimes not.

I'm in far North Central Texas.

Test your module. If there is no resistance, resistor is open or there is a bad solder joint somewhere. If you are good with the iron, try re-flowing all joints. If no joy replace the control module with OEM. Small modules at the JY's near me are less than $20. Bring your DVM to test the resistors before buying.

Thanks Kevin, I think I am going to order a new fan and new resistor to arrive around the same time as my new HVAC control panel. We shall see what happens!

So i got a used Climate control panel from an 04 and moved its guts to my 06 housing. Perfect fit, no changes.

An interesting note- It worked, speed will change and all that BUT ONLY when the ground was still hooked up to my switch pod.

When the wires were hooked back up to the factory harness? Nothing.

I made a mistake and I think my tool bumped two wires together (bleh) and blew the 60a fuse.

I have ordered a new 60a fuse, and new plug for the blower motor. It is back to my switch pod for now.

Questions:

1. Does a corroded/splashed fuse make that old circuit not work?
2. Where is the factory ground located for the blower fan? Perhaps its loose/corroded.

Worst case scenario, I hook the factory power back to the fan so its controlled by the panel, and make a new chassis ground for it. That way I know its grounded, the fuse is new, and it can still be controlled by the panel.

From what I've read, these "squirrel bowl" fans will run both directions- so the trick is to hook up the correct wire to get it to run in the direction of the arrow of the box so I get maximum airflow lol.


WHAT AN ADVENTURE. Especially since all of this happened after a heavy rain, the snorkel sucked up water from a 2+ foot puddle I hit on the highway, just dropped $$ on a Fox lift, and finally met a new local 4Runner group :tongue1:
