1991 4runner automatic transmission problem!

I have a 1991 Toyota 4runner 4x4 3.0 liter:cry2: with an automatic transmission problem. From a dead stop in drive when accellerating it winds out and slowly starts to go! seems to work fine if i start out in first and manually shift to second then to drive. The odd thing is when this occurs there are numerous warning lights appearing on my dash, such as low battery, oil light and brake light which all are functioning fine. Could it be a sensor of some sort or a relay?

Any suggestions?

You should really post this in the 2nd Gen forum (Classic T4Rs) rather than the 3rd Gen forum. More likely to find members more familiar with your setup.
