This is my first official post at T4R. It's going to be kind of a build thread with the general purpose to keep this thing on (and off) the road for as long as I can.
This is technically my 3rd 4runner, second that I've officially owned. The first one was my now wife's beater. Which I totally loved and stole whenever I had the chance too. Unfortunately, it was from the East and the salty winters have caused some nasty rust and made it an unsuitable platform to drive across the country to Alberta and to continue to put money into. It was a little black 4 banger with a manual transmission, 1992 I believe.
The second was eloquently named "Blue1". It was blue, and I bought it as a beater to drive to and from work and enjoy on the weekends. It also was a manual and this time it had a V6. Unfortunately for me, last spring it decided to give up the ghost and blow a famously bad headgasket on me. It was a 1993. It had a fair amount of rust, and when push came to shove, I thought it would be better to hunt down a better platform to keep for a long time.
Which led me to find my creatively named "Gray2". This is a 1991 that is in fairly great shape for the mileage and year. It's been repainted professionally as far as I can tell. The engine was apparently rebuilt 45,000 KM but I'm wondering true that may be. More on that later. It has 405,000KM on it now. It drives great and for the most part doesn't have too much to really fix on it. That being said, it's an older truck that will need love. I'm going to post more about each issue as i come to have the funds to fix each little thing. Unfortunately someone slid into her yesterday and gnarled my driver side front fender. Upsetting but we'll be discussing some options this afternoon for payment.
Right now, I have a sinking feeling the headgaskets on this one are fried as well. Coolant is disappearing and I can't find a leak. Everything is wet since it's spring time and I'll be doing some checks as soon as I am able to. I have a full engine gasket kit, but I've never done that level of tear down an engine before. I do have a father in law who is a huge toyota buff who will most likely help me out for most of that process. Here's a pic of his current and very old rig that he's had since he was my age:
I'm no stranger to body work, and my current 4runner has some very minor rust things I hope to fix this year. Here's a pic of my dad and I's project. It's a 1974 VW bug. I did all the body work, including the welding, and the priming. We had a local shop shoot the color and the clear coat. My dad buffed it out.
Love the forum and all the information I have found here. Hopefully I can learn and contribute as well.
