1991 4Runner Needs ALOT of TLC

I have a 1991 4Runner. I'm new to toyota vehicles and I have so many questions about this model. It needs alot of TLC. I paid 1400 cash for it. The person I bought it from said they had the engine rebuilt and restored this last winter. And they said they put in a new oil pump.

My details are as follows: 1991 Toyota 4runner with a 5speed manual transmission. SR5 2.4L 2366CC L4 GAS FI R 22RE

It started knocking and stalling last night. After getting it home I checked its oil, it was late and dark, but im pretty sure the dipstick had no oil on it. But after a check this afternoon the levels are halfway between Low and Full markings on the dipstick. I started it and there is no oil pressure and idles at 1100rpms until i rev up the rpms. The knocking noise ramps up with the rpms from 1-3k. I use the midgrade 87 octane chevron gas. I'm not sure what weight oil is i the engine at the moment.


Also the heater/cooler isnt blowing air at any speed. Please send a message. Any help is appreciated. Much T4R Love!

sounds like you need an oil/filter change amongst other things. Idle should be at about 800 rpm. I'd wait, more users will post with some helpful suggestions. welcome to the forum!

First step I would take would be increassing the octane level in ur gas by getting one of those octane boost additives from a auto parts store like napa,checkers, oreily, autozone, advanced auto parts.. see if that gets rid of the knocking sound.. check to make sure the oil pressure sending unit is hooked up.. make sure wire didnt come out.. also top off the oil and than shine a flash light in there to see if oil spitting up.. (if its spitting up or out than you def have oil pressure) if not than you really dont have any oil pressure which would cause the internals not getting lubbed up which could be the noise your hearing..

Those are just some things to look at while your waiting on some more posts from other mechanics.. or toyota specialists
