1992 4Runner - rebuilt engine - power issues

So, I am the proud new owner of a '92 4Runner, 3VZE engine, automatic...
The engine was just rebuilt.

My issue (well, one of them so far), is power. I have never owned a vehicle from new, or had a rebuilt engine, so I don't know what it normal and not.
But, climbing a hill today (minor hill, max speed of 80km/hr) I struggled to get her up to 70, and could only get to 80 once we got over the hill.

I used to have an 88 4runner,4 cyl, standard. I dont recall the power ever being this bad.

I just don't know what is normal. Can anyone help me out?

Sounds about right for the auto. Most who hate that motor, hate it because of the auto tranny behind it. That tranny makes the truck a dog. Swapping in a 5 speed would help.

There are other small things you can do. A compression test will tell you if the motors ok. Make sure its running good (plugs, wires, sensors, oils) and check your ignition timing. Factory is 10* but you can advance it up to 15* for a little more power.

Guess I should have added a little more to my post.

I just got the truck back, the engine is freshly rebuillt.
They put on brand new plugs/wires/cap/rotor, all of that.
Obviously new oil, new everything.

The shop had trouble getting the timing right. A lot of adjusting... still not working properly.

There was also an engine light. Code 14, and 52. (something to do with igniter, and knock sensor). They replaced the knock sensor, so its possible it is a faulty one. Otherwise, they are suspecting the timing belt? Which would be the engine rebuilders screw up.

The problem is at acceleration... soooo slow. Even on flat dry pavement. It shouldn't be like that, should it?

Either way, I have it back at the shop now. Looking into the knock sensor...

On another note. How big of a job is it to put a 5 speed in? How much does something like that cost? I imagine thats a biiiig job...
