1992 4Runner SR5 Beach Bum Wagon

Hey All,

I picked up this 1992 4runner for fairly cheap $1k in the beginning of summer and it has been great to me, no major problems (starter and alternator crapped out) and has done everything I've asked of it very well (well except merging into fast moving traffic...my many Broncos got me used to the power of a 351V8..lol)

I've recently decided that I'd like to keep it for a while and am looking to do a minor build on it. Right now it's a bone stock SR5, 3.0 5speed with some 31/10.5 Yokohama Geolanders on old ARE rims.

Right now the basics are on order, tailgate window motor, basic once over and some new seats. But after that I'd like to do a roof rack maybe a bumper and some basic rust repair (New York truck.....)


Here she is now, hopefully with this new wealth of knowledge I can fix her up!

Looks like I'll probably have to do ball joints soon. I'm thinking of doing the 2" spacer to get some lift, how do y'all feel about those for a mostly street driven truck?

I don't know anybody that makes a two inch ball joint spacer. Every "two inch" ball joint spacer I've seen has been a lie - they make 1.5 inch ball joint spacers, and tell you to get the other half-inch by cranking up your torsion bars, which I would not do. Personally, I wouldn't even buy from a company that wanted to lie to me about the size of their spacers - if I were you I'd get them straight from 4Crawler, I think he's got the best price anyway and doesn't give you any bullshit about how much lift they are. But they're perfectly safe. I wheeled my '86 with ball joint spacers for a couple years and had no trouble, they'll be fine on the street.

I've been doing basic maintenance on her for now, just did the tailgate window motor and most of the steering components and what a difference! I can't wait to hit the beach up this upcoming summer with all (except one) of the windows down and the music up!

I"ll look into the 4crawler spacers, I might go with them and the OME 3" springs cut a tad. I really am beginning to like this truck a lot, it really is a well built truck. :reddance:

If you plan to lift, you'll be putting bigger tires on? If you don't like the power response now, bigger tires are gonna make it worse. Look into 3.4 swap.

I think you should buy my entire Old Man Emu lift including ball joint spacers. I'll give you hell of a deal.

Hell of a deal for a grand! As for lifts ome coils and Bj spacers are your best bet, cheap and solid. As for roof racks look into the rola with the extension, you said this was a beach crawler, idk if you do any surfing but I'm able to fit my 6' short board and fishing rods on the rack and outta the cab, makes for amuck more comfortable ride.

Well it looks like I went a little off track....and spend crazy...bumper, winch, synthetic line and a LED light bar are on their way!.....whoops....:lookout:

Next up when tax return season comes about would be the lift/tires....:reddance:

Hopefully the 186k and counting truck will hold up....

Well here's the result of my ebay splurge...lol








The bumper fits wonderfully, and the winch is now 30lbs lighter with the synthetic rope...lol










The LED light bar though, that's the best thing on the truck, lights the woods up like it's daylight. Those two pictures are the same spot on an unlit road, headlights VS. LED light bar.
