1993 4 Runner Engine Compatability

We just bought my wife a 1993 Toyota 4 Runner and the engine is gone. Everyone is basically telling me the 3.0 V-6 engines that came in these were garbage. So I don't want to spend a bunch of money and time rebuilding or buying a new engine if its just going to die again in 6 months. So I am considering either a 3.4 V-6 out of a 1997 (I can get a core for fairly cheap) or putting a 4 cylinder in and put in a bigger cam. Will the 3.4 bolt up to our tranny? Has anyone here had any experience in this? Any help would be greatly appretiated, thanks in advance.

The 3.4s bolt up to the trannys on the 3.0s.
i believe you need the wiring harness and different motor mounts.
Best bet would be finding a wrecked tacoma and buy the whole thing for wiring and motor mounts.

Personally IMHO the 3.0 is a good engine if properly maintained and not treated like its a Ferrari... You have to understand its gutless and its not going to win you any stop light battles.. If you can find a good one put it in! Alot easier and less complications for a daily driver...

Do the ISR mod, put a freer flowing then stock exhaust/muffler, and advance the timing to 14 degrees BTDC (still safe for 87 octane)... Those 3 things combined will really wake the 3.0 up!

Have any of you guys done this swap before? Sure, the engine will bolt up to our tranny but that engine is obd 2, that means our tranny won't work because you need to swap the wire harness from the newer vehicle to our older vehicle, you need to swap the tranny, fuel lines, fuel tank, HOOD, ect, ect, ect.

Everyone thinks it's easy but it's a lot of work for sure. You need deep pockets $$$ and a donor vehicle to take everything off of.

It's not cheap, it's doable and has been done but will cost a lot of money and time.

I am contemplating doing it myself even after putting in a replacement 3.0 in my 91 t4r. I know I can do it, I have the knowledge, I just need the donor vehicle.

ANY engine conversion is a lot of work. When it comes to the 3.slo, the 3.4 is probably the easiest. ORS used to make a wiring harness for the swap, but they are gone so you need the harness and ECM from a donor.

Can you explain the ISR mod? And how are you advancing timing?

For sure the 3.0 is nothing great, but does pull nice from 3k-4500 rpm.
