1995 4runner Performance mods

I just got my 4runner a few months ago, and the gas mileage is horrible (12.5 city, 16 highway, and that is if i drive like my dear grandma) and my power is lacking. I am looking to put in a new exhaust system and air intake to enhance my power and MPG. Any suggestions?

I have a 1995 4runner SR5 3.0 L, 6 Cylinder. Everything is stock.

I am a poor college student, so I will probably have to upgrade one thing at a time, so what would be my best options to upgrade 1st?

I use my 4runner to commute to work, go camping/4wheeling (nothing serious), an occasional road trip, and snow driving. So getting better MPG is important to me. I am going to put a tow package on, but mainly want it for my hitch mounted bike rack, but will be towing a sail boat and other small trailers occasionally.

I have looked into some K&N air intakes, look pretty pricey. Does name brand important of these intake? What are the disadvantages to getting a cheaper intake?

I have looked into flowmaster exhaust systems, they look pretty nice. What is a good exhaust system? I want a good flowing cat and muffler, and I have seen some pipes that go up to 4inch, but i feel that is too big. I am more worried about performance than sound, but i don't want it to be too loud.

Would it be worth looking into a ignition module? I'm not sure how important that is on these older vehicles.

Thanks
