1995 4wd problems

Ok i am having problems with my 4wd system. When I put it into H4 I can feel the transfercase make a thumping noise like its engaging but theres now power going to the front wheels. Also, when I engage the 4wd lever, I can hear a "click" in the dashboard which from what I've been able to find is the relay making the noise. So does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? Any help would really be appreciated and might save me a good chunk of change. I almost forgot to mention, it's an auto tranny with the 3.0 motor.

funny, im having the same problem with my 96 sr5.
Its sucks to drive in the snow without 4x4.

Have you checked if the front shaft is engaged?
Just put it in 4wd and lay under the car, in gear and check if you can rotate the shaft or not.

If the shaft is locked in, then probably the wheeling hubs are not engaging, iirc it's the same system as in my '90 T4R, vaccum thingy. There could be a leakage some where around there. (I don't have my repair manual so I can't state it too well how this works or what could be broken)
But if you can rotate the shaft without difficulties, there's something wrong with the shifter. Try checking the ECU, I think there are some senors around the 4wd system.

Don't get run over! Make sure you don't have a woman in the drivers seat while you are underneath that truck while it is running.....and in gear. :behead:

I assume your truck has Auto Disconnecting Differential (ADD)? If so, it could be your ADD actuator, or the vacuum switching valves (VSVs) that are faulty. Check your vacuum hoses going to the ADD actuator to make sure they're all connected and not damaged.
