Neighbor down the way wants to pay me to replace the rear wheel bearings in his SC400. I've never done shadetree work before, what should I charge him? I guess the job quotes at 5.5 hours.

Just charge him like $50 an hour plus parts.

do you have a press, and the ability to R&R the bearings out of the spindle?
if not, make sure to add in enough to cover the shop prices for doing that.

i charge friends half of what a professional makes, coworkers get $15 an hour under pro rates, family is free

I would say that's on the lower end. around here we see anywhere from $65 to $90/hr.

the last shop i was in had them posted on the wall, 65 for domestic 75 for import, just for labor, diagnostic rates were higher

In DC and the surrounding area, $90 is the low end, with usually a Benjamin as the standard rate, with $125 not being unheard of.
Make sure you have a press, and closely check the tolerances of both hubs. My cousin had this car; her ex husband was an indy mechanic and it took him about 4 hours total, but they had to buy a new hub from the dealer at about $150 I think before pressing the right rear one in.
