1995 Tailgate Window Malfunctioning

Hi.

I'm new to the forum. My question is:

I have a 1995 Toyota 4Runner SR5. Bought about 2 years now and it was working fine. Now I'm having troubles with my tailgate window. It went all the way up, but since, never went down again. It does not work from the console switch, nor the rear key. However, when the switch is pressed in the up side, it makes a clickcing noise, but nothing if I press the down side button.

Any help would be great, since I have a little kid and it's not easy to load or unload stuff due to our kid's car seat.

Thanx and you have a great website!!!

This topic is already on the board in two different threads. You can also search for the other threads on this topic, I know there's more out there. There's lots of info on this topic although no-one has a DIY with pictures yet. The tailgate window is a very common problem spot.

Welcome to the site.

Just fixed the same problem...first thought was the window motor...turned out motor was fine...after replacing a new motor it did the same thing...would go up but not down.

Traced the problem to the "power window relay" this part is behind the plastic panel in the back on the drivers side. Two bolts hold it in...simply buy a new one. Unplug your old one and replace.

Good and bad news.... bad first, Toyota wants near $400 for this piece. Good news, you can find a deal like I did on a used peice out of a junker on ebay or other similar sites (or scrap yards). Payed $60 bucks for mine. Window works great.

hope that helps.

Make sure your rear wiper is all the way in its seat. If the rear wiper is not all the way in its seat, then the window safety switch is triggered and the window will not come down. Conversely, if the window is down, then the rear wiper will not work if it is turned on. So turn on the rear wiper, let it cycle thru a swipe and then turn off and make sure it returns all the way and then perhaps your window will come down.

This is what the issue was with mine.

Tailgate Window Malf.

I had this same prob on my 95 4runner. Took it to a mechanic and the mechanic thought it was a switch too. He was too busy to get to it that day and I needed my vehicle so I took it home only to figure out that the child lockout switch was on. Boy did I feel like an idiot. Well, at least it wasn't just me. Check that first before costly mechanics who don't know any better either get a hold of it.

Hey there, I am trying to fix my tailgate window issue on my 95 and cannot figure out what it is. I have heard about the child lock being an issue from other sites, but is there really a child lock for the back tailgate window? If so, where is it?? Thanks.
