1996 5 speed intro

Bought this 1996 5 speed with 224k miles about 3 months ago. Has a few bumps and bruises, but is solid. Everything works, and has was trouble free for about a month,then I got P0141 01/02 per my scanner. I took this as the rear most O2 sensor. So I replaced it with the correct Denso part. Then about 2 days later I got P0141 01/01. Figured this was the front O2 sensor. Replaced that with the Denso part, code still exists (P0141 01/01). What else should I look for? Possibly the MAF? The DTC is pretty explicitly for the 02 sensors, but I'm at a loss.

Cleaning the MAF may not hurt. Just make sure to clean it up the tube as well as what you can see. A lot of people neglect the first part. Clear the code, yank the EFI relay for 10min or so, pop it back in and see if the code comes back.
 
Yea, cleaning the MAF won't hurt anything. Just odd that both O2 codes popped up back to back, and code is still there after changing both. The cat converter is close to new as well.
 
So in my reading I'm seeing alot about the P0141 meaning the rear sensor and the P0135 meaning the front sensor (Fed emissions)

My code is P0141 01/01. Is the 01/01 just a function of my scanner? Does the P0141 always mean the rearmost sensor, regardless of any numbers after the code?

I've replaced the rear sensor with the recommended Denso part about a month ago, still getting P0141 01/01.

truck runs fine. Idles fine. No odd behavior at all.
 
So what would be my next step after unhooking battery, cleaning MAF (it was a bit dirty), have replaced both O2 sensors in the past month with new Denso, inspected and cleaned O2 harness plugs, and still get P0141 01/01?

Truck cranks up and run great, plenty of power, no odd smells or other behavior. Gets decent gas mileage.

The code always returns at the same point in my commute after I clear it the night before.

So I was being dumb....the 01/01 was just telling me that the code was 1 of 1.

So I'm getting P0141 even after a new Denso 02 sensor. Ran fine for 2 months and then CEL out of nowhere. Cleaned MAF and changed sensor, code back in 10 miles.

This could only be the rear O2 sensor correct?

Checked the resistance reading at the rear O2....getting within spec.....

is there a O2 fuse? I see that some of the other Toyota models have it.

Most always say that the ECM 'rarely' goes bad....but maybe it has? Should/would that cause other driveability issues?
 
Still working through the O2 code, but decided to lift it a bit and get some new tires.

265/75/16 BFG AT are in the garage to be installed once the 2" lift is on.

Messed up my gas tank when dropping it for a bit of rust repair, so went hunting for a new one yesterday. Found on I think will work at the semi-local scrap yard.

So even after a very modest lift, the front CVs started slinging grease on both sides. From some quick research, seems that this maybe ok for a while? The CVs seem to be fine otherwise, no noises or boot tears.

Also replaced my front sway bar bushings...complete with broken bolts. It was time.

If the boots are not ripped you could try to re-clamp them. Go too long and you might not have any grease left. This happened as soon as I installed my lift. I pulled the axles and rebooted them using Toyota boots/grease and did the "boot slide mod". This has held up great for over a year so far.

I took this route because I wanted to keep the Toyota axles as they are far superior to the cheap aftermarket stuff you will regularly find. Search around here and you will see people break the spline shaft where it mates with the diff. Not fun.

there are some aftermarket extended boots available too but the feedback on those seems mixed.

Cool truck btw. Is it a 3.4L?
 
Got a favor to ask...

So I've been dealing with a nagging P0141 code (O2 sensors not heating up like the computer wants). I've tested the sensors off the truck, and they heat up in 2 mins with 12V directly supplied. However, I don't know exactly when they are supposed to heat up when on the truck, and to what temp. Do they begin to heat up with just the key on or does the engine have to be running?

So I took both my sensor out but left them attached to the harness and turned the key ON.....neither sensor got warm. I'm wondering if this is normal? I'm trying to narrow down if my ECM is bad.

So, can someone with a 1996 or 1997 3.4l 5 speed run a test for me? Take the sensors out (on a cold engine, hasn't been run in a few days or so) and turn the key on, but don't start it. Let me know if the sensors 1 or both or neither, get warm in less than 5 mins.

I'll paypal you some $ for a 6 pack of your favorite beverage.

Still dealing with the P0141 code. I replaced the rear O2 sensor with a Denso part about 4 months ago, but the code came right back.

Cleaned and confirmed the connection at the sensor was good.

Before I dive deeper into troubleshooting (new or rebuilt ECM), I'm gonna replace the sensor again, just to see.

Denso 234-4154. We shall see.

You've cleaned, but have you tested the MAF?

I've not checked the MAF, but I can. However nothing in the FSM states that a bad MAF would cause the particular O2 sensor code. If I'm understanding it correctly, the sensors should start heating up with just the key on (not running, no airflow), so the MAF would not be part of the equation. This is why I wanted someone to test a proper working system for me...to see when the sensors heat.

Cali emissions shouldn't be any different in this regard ( I think), since i'm only concerned with the rear (after cat) sensor.

You're right, but you'd mentioned the maf and I had that on hand, and you're also right in that Cali shouldn't matter for this, just letting you know exactly what I have.
 
Didn't have a chance to test the MAF, but did replace the rear O2 sensor again. Code came right back.

I figured as much, another $50 down the drain.
