1999 3.4 4wd: Just remember, you can only move the removed starter forward in a 2wd vehicle. Still even in a 4wd, the skid pan comes out so easily that is probably worthwhite to help you to study the situation. You just can't go forward out that way with the starter. I removed the upper transmission fill tube. (12 mm bracket bolt and slide it up and out) Use some tinfoil to cover the top of the bottom tube. This job is not fun because of the clearance issues but remove the bottom bolt with a 14mm socket, 12 inch extension, ratchet and one foot cheater bar. Use the 12 inch extension with a flex joint for the top 14mm bolt. The extensions are extended straight aft with you below and behind the starter. Once you get the starter free, you can end for end the starter in that small cavity and then take it out aft between the exhaust and power steering tubes. I was lucky and a rebuilt starter had been installed fairly recently so every bolt was in good shape. Again really don't need to remove the skid pan for 4wd but it allows in light and lets you scope the situation.
