1997 4runner transmission drain and fill

I have a 1997 4runner automatic with a v6, I just did a drain and refill on my transmission. I read on the forums that a 1998 4runner drain and refill would take 4 quarts of fluid, however when I did my 1997 only 2 quarts drained out. Is there something not right about the amount that was drained? I checked the fluid level after putting approximately 2 quarts and it shows to be right above the "hot" mark on the dipstick.

Can someone help verify that this drain and refill only takes 2 quarts. I don't want to run it low on fluid.

You are checking the fluid level with the engine running after going through the gears with the shifter and then stopping in neutral or park right?

The owners manual says these only take 2 quarts for a drain and fill but from my experience and everyone else's I've read it's 4-5.

Hmmm, when I did the drain, I got the full 4 quarts. The book says it should be 2.1 quarts though for a drain, maybe there's something to that.

If it matters, mine is a 2wd version. Yes I went through all the gears while the car was running and checked with the engine running. I did read some of your comments before stating it takes 4 qts. Strangely only 2 qts came out and the level seems right when i measured.

The manual actually says for 2wd, the refill is only 1.7 qts, 2.1 qts for 4wd versions. right now with 2 qts added, it's reading on the (hot) very high mark, slightly above it.

I guess if 2 came out and 2 went in and the dip stick says everything is cool it is. I wonder if the 2WD models have a different/shallower pan on the transmission?

Anybody else out there with a 2WD that's done a drain and fill and only got 2 quarts out?
