1998 4 Runner Ck Engine Light problem

Has anyone else had this problem??? After having my timing light, valve cover gaskets, and plenum gasket changed, my ck engine light comes on and stays on with the following codes 0300, 0302, and 0305. All are for cylinder misfires. I changed out all 3 coil packs, new wires, and plugs with Toyota OEM parts. Still same thing. I reset the codes and they came back on. Cannot figure out the problem. Please help. Any ideas?

I did not know the 4runner had a timing light. What is it really?

If you changed the valve cover gaskets yourself, go back and check the wiring. Also check all the vacuum connections. If not, have the shop do such. They may have pinched a wire, left a connecter undone, etc.

Sorry, I meant Timing Belt. DUH!!! No I had this work done at a shop. I checked all the wiring I can see, but cannot take it all apart as then I would need the gaskets and may as well have done it all myself. : (

I do not trust that shop now. The guy had his young son working on it and I think he messed it up. I was wondering about the fuel injectors. Thanks. I did find one of the hoses off and I connected it last night. Thought that would do it. Then took it for a ride and at 70 mph, the ck engine light started flashing again. Then at 50 mph it started flashing too. This morning it is on constantly again. Need to check to see if the codes are the same. Haven't had time. UGH!

If the timing was not properly set it could cause misfires. I'd take it back to the shop, tell them you want an experienced mechanic working on it going forward.

#2 and #5 are on the same coil pack. (Any time the difference between two P030x codes is three it is a red flag.) Double check the connection between the coil pack and the igniter on the rear-most coil pack (Cyl.#5), somebody may have screwed it up. I'd do the coil swap trick even though the coils and wires are supposed to be new.

This goes double if the codes come back 02 and 05 again, or any combo with a difference of three.

BTW, a flashing MIL indicates a BAD misfire, that may cause cat damage due to unburned fuel in the exhaust stream. Don't let a loose wire kill your cat.

Finally, why would anyone let you change all three coil packs when the codes only indicate one is a possible fail?

Sounds to me like they installed the belt a tooth off on one of the cams .

Sorry, but #2 and #5 are on different banks. It would have to be both cams, or the crank gear--same thing. And then you would expect other cylinders to also be involved. I find it hard to believe valve timing would throw those codes.

I've seen this exact same thing happen before... Yes it's usually on the same side of the engine.

OK so there were no codes before the timing belt, now there is? My first instinct would be to double check anything that was changed. Otherwise things going out would be completely by coincidence.

Took to dealer. Cleaned injectors and system. Valve covers were leaking and replaced gaskets. Still same problem. Taking it back in morning. Asked the service mgr if the mechanic checked the timing. He did not know. Told him he needs to do that. Geeeez! Who's the mechanic here???

Friend of mine had valve cover gasket replaced on his 99 sport. Afterwards, Don't know what codes it threw (can find out)but for whatever reason the mechanic un bolted a ground wire on the side of the block. Started the bolt but did not tighten it. tightened it up and light is off.

Might not be your issue but figure it's worth a shot
