1998 4Runner. Rear hatch dead. No wiper, no power window, license plate lights, etc..

I actually have a question about this as well, my rear hatch lock seems to be on the fritz, normally I have to hit lock/unlock several times for it to actually 'lock' or 'unlock'.

the sensor that tells if the rear hatch is open (and controls the dome light) doesn't work hardly ever. I bought a new latch and am planning to install that but also wondering if there's anything else I should look for.

The first issue (no 'beep' when remote locking) means the rear lock is getting sticky and not fully engaging. Lock it with the key and try the remote again - if it beeps right away, you have a sticky lock actuator/lock.

The latch switch for the rear dome light can/does go bad. I just noticed mine wasn't working a few days ago. Once again, you might be able to clean/fix it, but a new latch is also a solution.

I should have specified, I meant I have to hit lock or unlock on the remote or on the door panel thing multiple times for the rear door to lock or unlock, not just the remote.

It actually does beep when I lock with the remote, however my remote only arms the alarm and unlocks, it doesn't lock (I do that from the switch on the drivers side door) Even if I 'lock' it and the alarm arms, I can still open the back door sometimes

Is the latch switch located inside the latch itself? I was trying to figure that out the other day but wasn't too sure where it was located

The bottom latch have 2 cables that go up from the mechanism at the bottom of the rear door hatch. This bolts to the bottom of the hatch. Those cables go up to the mechanism that connects to the handle and the unlock lock mechanism. and the key cylinder as well. There is a switch on the back of the key cylinder that controls the rear door hatch window. The key will unlock and lock via rod over to the solenoid that controls it.

I trying to recall the location of the switch for the latch. I am thinking its in the mechanism a lot higher in the door with everything else. The 2 cables goto that mechanism where all the switches, lock solenoid is.

Gotcha, I did grab the wires that went up with it when I got my new latch so that's one thing taken care of, I am interested in the unlock lock mechanism you mentioned, it appears that Tim made a video on repairing that so I'll give that a watch later today, that might be my actual problem

Oh, just noticed you have a '98 - which is different than the '99+ trucks with 'beeps' etc...

The switch for the hatch area light is in the latch mechanism in the door.
