1998 Toyota 4runner 4 cyl. rear window makes a "grinding" sound going up

So I've had this awesome 98 4runner and I love the thing but I'm having an issue with the rear window as I roll it up. It makes a grinding sound and I'm wondering if any of you has come across it by any chance. I'm Alan from Pomona, Ca btw. Any help/suggestion/advice is greatly appreciated.

Take the interior panel off of the hatch. One bolt to take off the grab strap, then there are I believe 6 clips along the perimeter of the panel. Once you pop one, the rest are easy. Once all the clips are popped, slide the panel toward the window, as the panel hangs on a lip. From there you'll have access to the mechanism. Operate the window or have a friend operate it so you can observe what's happening.

Edit: forgot underneath the plastic panel there are two black metal plates that need to be removed. 8-10 bolts total.
