1998 with 3rd member howl and movement

So I called my favorite local parts house to get a 3rd member rebuild kit and he is telling me that I have a choice of 2 pinion or 4 pinion. The only thing that makes sense to me about that is 2 spider gears or 4 spider gears. Anybody run into this before? Thanks, Brian

Either one of those quotes beats the $2000 quote I got from the dealership...because they don't rebuild them. Thats for a new one, and without labor. Good to know they're available though...just in case.:lol:

That's garbage, Retail is about $1500, and toyota of Dallas sells it the whole shebang for $1k. Man dealers suck.

I will admit that I am in over my head on the technicalities, I am taking the 3rd member untouched to a qualified indiviual to pull apart and set back up. I am just attempting with my meager knowledge to gather the proper parts first Thanks, Brian

Just be sure you are using the same terminology as in the link. There are pinion gears, and side gears. If you have 4 gears in the carrier (2 small pinion/spider gears and 2 side gears with internal splines), then you have 2-pinion. There wasn't a good pic of the 4 pinion, but with 4-pinion you would have 6 gears in the carrier (4 small pinion gears, and 2 side gears with internal splines) and a cross shaped piece in the middle. I think you should have 4-pinion.

I'm having the same issues you are describing with my 99 runner. I found this site while looking for a used 3rd member. Has anyone ever looked into these folks? Curious if it's a reputable source and could be a turn key deal for a rebuild rear diff.
