I was thinking of doing this to my '00 runner as well, but would like to do a 35w-5k type of HID kit. (Namely the DDM kit).

Although the OEM calls for a 55w bulb, I think you'll be okay with the 35w. I have the DDM 35W in one of my other cars and believe me, it's plenty.

You can run either the 55w or 35w. The 55w kits wont last as long because they run so hot but they are definitely brighter. I have heard of people "modding" the ballasts so they are cooler by cutting vents etc. into them. Not something you want to do if you wheel. The 55w will also cause the bulbs temperature to creep over time, ie. change colour. This happens regardless (35w or 55w) but will be faster when running a 55w setup.
Check out The Retrofit Source online: headlight upgrades for all applications for ballasts and bulbs. It isnt a projector only store. They sell Morimoto ballasts for drop in kits and Morimoto bulbs. Both are nearly as good as OEM products for 2/3 the price!

I'm one of the "drop HID's into my stock headlights" guys and I'm getting flashed offend. I have the 4300k bi-zenon kit. I'm going to try and aim my lights down to see how it affects my vision and frequency of getting flashed. For those that have converted to projector headlights how hard is it to do and what's the cost? If you could supply links to projectors that fit a 97 4Runner I'd be interested in investigating them.

seriously guys now i am being an ass cause those 55W kits are terrible and if you get them i hope its it burns the crap out of your wiring harness and you lose lots of money! Those are the ones that are gonna cause you some road rage, and all kinds of other problems, 35 watt im ok with my eyes can handle those but just look at my crappy output in those pics. hell watch this video,

No. The Kelvin rating on the bulb stays the same no matter what ballast you run. Getting a 10000k or 12000k bulb is going to give you very poor lighting performance even if you choose the 55w hid kit. The higher the "k" (stand for Kelvin, but represent the temperature, or colour of the bulb) the more blue/purple your light will be. 10000k should be rainbow purple and 12000k should be like Barney the gay dinosaur. The brightest and best bulbs as far as light output are concerned, are around the 4300k mark. This will be closest to true "white light" and definitely the brightest. If you want your lights to look ballin' and have some blue, get 5000k as it's still very bright and has a little more blueish colour. If you want a hid bulb for fog lights, run a 3000k or 3200k as it will be nice and yellow and not bounce back off of fog/snow etc....

Since I already have the hid bulbs and ballasts all I need are the projector lenses themselves to retrofit my stock headlights. I'm not able to find just the HB2/9003 projector lenses. Anyone seen these? All I'm finding are kits with the projectors and bulbs/ballasts.

yeah i had that same problem. if your using the h4 bulb, i dont think there is a projector that uses that bulb but im not 100% positive. i would check out the HIDplanet forum and just search the h4 bulb and see if anyone has used it.

Admittedly I know next to nothing about HID, headlights, etc. so spare me if this is a stupid question/statement. Would it be advisable (cheaper, easier, still legal) to use an auxiliary projector HID driving light rather than retrofit ones headlights. In other words, leave the stock lights alone and add some projector HID driving lights to the bumper? I don't even know if it's legal to drive at night with auxiliary lighting, but if it is that seems like the simplest solution for those who want improved lighting without performing the retrofit.
Edit: So I just read the NJ driving manual and it says "Parking or auxiliary lights cannot legally be used in place of
headlights when headlights are required." Auxiliary lights used in conjunction with headlights would seem to be legal here. Regarding fog lights the statute reads "These auxiliary driving lights may be used with low-beam headlights to
provide general lighting ahead of a motor vehicle, specifically during foggy weather
conditions (N.J.A.C. 13:20-32.25)." It says fogs are an auxiliary lights that can be used with low beams specifically during foggy weather, but nowhere does it say auxiliary driving lights cannot be used under ordinary conditions.
I would think it would be okay then to add supplementary HID driving lights.

The one thing that pisses people off more than HIDs can, lol. Its like running with HIDs on high beam all the tme.
And no, not even close to being legal.

So is the problem that auxiliary lights wouldn't have the necessary cut off that a retrofitted head light would? Do they not make auxiliary lights with cutoffs?
Also, do you think Sylvania's premium bulbs like the Ultra's or ZXE's are worthwhile in improving the stock lighting? Would they come anywhere close to a proper HID setup?

Do you have the ultra's or the "regular" silverstars? How long have they lasted? Big improvement over stock?

your best bet if you did not want to run HIDs in your stock housings is like you said get some kind of aux HID light but wire them to come only when you turn on your brights or by switch.There are projector auxilary bumper mountable lights out there and HID offroad lights.
