1999 4runner limited

Hey T4R!

I'm new to the forum and I recently purchased my very first 4runner a few weeks ago and I love it! I sold my 2003 nissan maxima, and I wanted a bigger vehicle for my family. I was on the fence between the 4runner and pathfinder and even a qx4. After doing some research I've decided to go with a 3rd gen 4runner!

1999 limited edition
Desert dune metallic
130k miles
2wd
Basically this is my daily driver, but I want to be able to take it off-road thru some light trails and camping.

I have a few concerns and I would appreciate your help guys

1. The idle is steady between 600-700, but once in awhile I have a random vibration and it doesn't affect the idle at all.

2. I hear a ticking..doesn't seem to come from the engine but near the driver side near the firewall.

3. I want some clearance and I'm considering taking the running boards off but it's a convenient way to get in n out of the truck lol. Any Alternatives for the running boards?

Hi! Welcome :welcome: to t4r. I'd say running boards off it's going to feel like you lifted your truck for free and it shouldn't be too bad for the little ones they can learn how to climb :noidea: :bounce:

Change your plugs (dual electrode) and wires if they haven't been done already.

Sliders, tubes are alternatives to the running boards. Check fellow members build threads.

The ticking is more than likely from one part of the charcoal canister. It won't hurt anything, just annoying. Check your gas cap first. I replaced mine, and the ticking went away, but now is back. As I get closer to empty, the ticking diminishes. About $230 from an online Toyota parts dealer or $__________ from a junkyard.

If your gonna wheel it I say keep the running boards on mine saved my truck from body damage its worthe the extra protection so Ill keep them on till I get sliders

Sorry for bringing this back and possibly hijacking, but I've got an issue that needs to be addressed as this is my work truck and I can't afford for it to blow up. I have a 1999 limited, it's making this clicking/knocking sound and I'm praying to God that it's not a Rod. It doesn't do it at higher rpm than 1500, probably because of being masked or something by the other normal engine noise, and it doesn't affect the performance at all. Any ideas or input? Rudy99 - sounds pretty normal to me. Believe me a rod would be Much Louder, much more like a 3 pound hammer knocking over and over without quitting no matter what the rpm. Any other reasons you think there is a problem? :cowboy:
