1999 Limited 2wd ATX Restoration

Yep, I had the same issue repeatedly with aftermarket rear drums, they were all round, but the surface was not concentric with the lugs/hub. I was going to suggest looking at that. Also, for machine work I have been using Austin machine shop, and have only had one issue, which they paid for and corrected. I had them do my rear axles and front wheel bearings and upper ball joints on a couple different 4Runners. Pretty good prices too.

So frustrating! Happy to report she is braking perfectly now!

If you ever need anything holler, I just bought all the tools to do the rear bearings, BJ's etc.

Well, I finally pulled the trigger. TRD blower is on way along with some TRD headers, pretty dang excited. I have a lot of experience with turbo but this is my first supercharged vehicle.

Now I need a hood :)

Curious, where did you get the blower from? And good luck with the Headers....

I have heard horror stories, my trick (doesn't always work) is to buy used. If someone got them to fit I should stand a better chance myself. I have a full shop, fun or not I will sort it out. I have built a number of turbo BMWs and it done well for me so far, who knows. :bowl:

I was THIS close to pulling the trigger on a 2JZ swap...

It's Friday the 13th, my good luck day so I figured I would check eBay one last time. Found a unit, made an offer and ended up buying his headers and TRD LSD.

I will update the thread as parts arrive and I get to work.

Blower and CAI are on the way, LSD and headers will follow. The headers will be sent out for thermal coating, the rest of the suspension will also end up getting powder coated.

More pics to come... I have a new vision for an urban pre-runner, I'm not hitting any jumps but I'll hop a median to get on the highway lol

Almost everything has arrived. Supercharger, headers and LSD are here along with about 75% of the refresh parts. I will be doing VCGs and the timing belt/water pump along with some additional new OEM bits.

Next up is to decide what I want to do for fueling...

Rebuilt the gen 1 blower, pretty straightforward process. Installed it along with new plugs, coil packs, 2" pulley, PCV etc. Still have to do the VCG and the trans filter/seal along with my inner and outer tie rods. Ended up picking up some 16" Fn wheels. Starting to really come together.

The blower is so nice, truck absolutely should have came this way.

Few more parts arrived, sway bar bushing were a long time coming, mine are horribly shot. Also ordered new upper strut hardware from ToyTech, man those guys ship fast!

I also found ended up with a matching set of shrouds from the retrofit source, ha. Apparently they had some incorrectly packaged inventory. These weren't my first choice but they look pretty good, most people couldn't tell they aren't OEM.

Install was silly easy and everything works like a charm and HELLLLL YEAAAA I can finally see while driving at night.

More to come!
Links to the projectors and shrouds? Looks good!

I am a long time eBay guy and just had a saved search. A gen 1 popped up, made an offer and the guy accepted it. Turns out it was off his truck that was totaled and he also had the TRD headers and TRD LSD along with the blower rebuild kit and a K&N CAI kit. I made an offer and he accepted. I got into everything for just under $2k, not a bad deal at all.

I installed the blower as it arrived just to check things out, all I did was install new o-rings on the bypass elbow and picked up a dynamic tensioner. Ran well but had chatter from a worn coupler, the next day I popped it off and rebuilt it. Not a bad process at all with a press, I also added a 2.1" pulley. Ordered my URD 7th injector and of course NOW they are out of stock, I just use 93 and some octane booster.

My one weird issue is that the fueling struggles on hard turns at low throttle, but it was doing that before the blower. I will install the new pump and see if that helps, may install new injectors but those would not suffer during a turn.

The headers will be fun, but, (un)lucky me I have a pretty heavily built twin turbo BMW and that has much worse access. I am 2wd so that will help me a bit, also going to pull my starter to rebuild the contacts.Next up I need to finish installing the last of the OEM steering bits, lift it 3", grab some bigger tires and finish my poly bushings. I also have the final bits like the VCG etc.

I will say that the blower is awesome and I am so happy I installed it, truck is much better to drive and I can get out of my own way. Wont see how it tows until I get the injector, I may also add meth as it is so hot down here.

If you are looking for one just keep your eyes peeled. I was literally walking into Lowes, got the alert, made a low off and by the time I checked out he had accepted and we were texting. A few things I would say, especially if you are looking used (guessing you are).

- If you buy one that does not have the dynamic tensioner, buy one, its worth the $170.

- If you end up with the gen 1 I would also replace the two o-rings that are available from Jon Bond.

- The throttle bracket is tough to find stand alone so make sure you try and find one that is included or negotiate the price down. Magnusson sells them for $30 but they are hard to get and their service is spotty. URD claims they don't exist so you have to spend $150 for the install kit. I was not stoked to pay $150 and only use the bracket (mine came with a single tab bracket).

- I would recommend new coil packs and a MAF along with the plugs. Long time car guy and even with no codes your coils get tired and the MAF is really important for forced induction, you can find it all for $200 or less (OEM maf and NAP coils).

- DO IT.

Thank you! I went with the Morimoto kit from the retrofit source, I think these may be the gattling shrouds, let me check. I highly recommend their kit, it was incredibly simple to build these and the output matches that of my BMW.

Also, who has a sport hood?! The truck really needs one and I haven't had any luck local in Austin. Trying to find a good source.

Pulled the starter to install new contacts, that upper bolt was a real bastard. Once I got the right extension combo sorted and found a leverage point it came right off, but man, I hate upper starter bolts.

Contact was pretty much toast, glad to have consistent starting back.

Suspension recommendations? I want to lift it and while I have new 5100's and new rear OEM tall springs, I would like a complete kit. I think I may just grab the ToyTech coilover lift kit, I like that it is complete. Anything else? Clearly I don't wheel it, just want a wheel sorted and balanced suspension.

i have the toytech boss coilover kit with spc control arms and it rides pretty nice.

Ordered the boss kit and SPC upper control arms yesterday, looking forward to getting those installed.

Slight rant:

Next up is another waiting game from URD. I will say they offer a lot of great products and the support is responsive, wish I could say the same about the service.

I ordered the $150 install kit (just to get my $30 throttle bracket) after Gadget told me Magnusson does not sell just the bracket. Ask him about this on the phone and he confirms. I order that along with my dynamic tensioner. I pay, get my invoice and then buried in a secondary email there is a note that the tensioner is back stocked.

Awesome. Really wish the site reflected that before you took my money. I get pretty upset and call Magnusson direct. What do you know... They have tensioners and LOW AND BEHOLD they sell the bracket on it's own for $30

At this point I am furious, I really do not like to be lied to. I had some words with Gadget and then just opened a paypal claim until they sent me my tracking. Don't say its in stock, take my money and then send an alert about through your system. Call me or email me, you required my phone number, use it.

Two weeks later the tensioner shows up. Great, now I can install the SC.

While I am lucky to have 93 octane I am running a 2.1" pulley and need supplemental fuel to fully enjoy the truck and pull my boat. Three weeks ago Gadet mentions they have plenty of those in stock when I'm ready. Well, once the tensioner finally arrived I decided against my better judgement and ordered their $900 7th injector kit (nothing else on the market).

Next day, I get the same idiotic system email with the follow:

"Hello, a note has just been added to your order:

thank you for your order, we are currently out of stock and will ship in a few weeks

For your reference, your order details are shown below."

:pout:

Seriously? What does a few weeks me, that may be two to me or four to him. Also being in sales, that response means "I have no idea, we are guessing based on our suppliers"

So now I am out $900, no ETA.

End rant, just very annoyed when people take my money and just say "Yeah a few weeks"

Yes, I have call and email into Gadget, which is not going to help as he wont be able to provide dates. Awesome.

Well, some better news. Parts arrived!

Almost all the parts, for whatever reason FedEx loaded the third package on an different truck that I still do not have. :bash: Waiting for the boss rear shock, until then I am just using my 5100s.

Everything is very well built, no complaints there at all, had to go buy a 32 mm socket for the SPC control arms. Also installed new OEM inner and outer tie rods. Now lets see if Firestone can get the alignment right. More photos to come.

Ha! saw "restoration" in the title and new you would end up lifting but didn't see the supercharger coming.

Lets see some pics of the boat!

I'm just down the road in SA if you ever need a hand.

Cheers!

Haha, anyone who knows me knows, I always end up going all in. Let me get some good boat pics! I also restored my 1991 Champion 168 bass boat.

Thanks for the offer, if you ever need anything I have it all up here, presses, axle tools, sand blaster, A/C recharger. I like doing my own work, a lift is next.

Where in SA? I grew up in the NW.

Quick photo getting aligned today!
