1999 limited

Hello All
I am looking at picking up a 99 runner limited. wanted to know everyones thoughts. i have never owned a runner and was wondering if there are any common problems or problem areas i should look at/for prior to buying it.
any help would be much appreciated

In personal belief, I think the 99 limited (preferably with 4X4) is the best combination of 4Runner there is (because that is what i have!)

99 is when all of the mid generation changes happened and if you dont know any of the new parts look it up, and I love my limited I will never go to a SR5 after having some nice features like automatic climate control, button on the key fob for the rear window, digital odometer, all options not offered on the sr5 and not even on a 98 limited

Ive also got 234K and so far needed to replace the valve cover gasket and currently have a problem with a leaking rear axel but overall I love my car and wouldnt trade it for any other comprable car

I second this but with the V8 of course. Good luck trying to find a 99 Limited with the V8 as they were very rare.

The V8 did not come out in the states until 2003 for the 4runner. It is true that some people have done an engine swap but no 4runner before 2003 had a V8 at least in the states.

My 2001 SR5 has the rear window button on the key fob. The climate control is a nice feature.....till it dies.Very expensive to replace.I just wish I had the rear diff lock. Other than that I love my plain old SR5:driving:

Wrong on key fob and digital odometer, all '99+ have those. You can keep your auto climate. It breaks, often expensively, and I want my heater & AC to do what I want them to do when I want it to, not when it decides to do it.

But my '99 SR5 has an option NOT available on the Limited that I would never part with: 5 speed transmission.

To the OP: the nice thing about '99 is that many came with the tall springs--most 4x4's with 16" wheels. They are the tallest stock springs on any 3G. If you have them, the front springs will have blue and pink blazes on the left and blue/yellow on the right. (And YES they did come on SR5's, and not just on Highlanders, a common misconception around here.)

Dont forget about multimode on the 99 limiteds (yes I know its available later). Its a terrific option and when you use it for its intended purpose it is priceless. It's great when main roads are plowed pretty good but side roads and parking lots are not. It's a seamless transition that works well with that center diff.

99 limited is what you want: MM AT, locker, talls. Climate control can fail, but you can get it fixed cheap enough.

Not all of them have lockers. Not sure if you were saying they do or not but figured I'd chime in.

I'm with Durk, I have a '99 SR5 Highlander (with leather) and a 5 speed. I'd take the manual trans over a Limited any day. I too prefer to avoid the auto climate control.

All in all though, 3rd Gens as a whole a great vehicles. I kind of like them...
