1999 Master cylinder

Noticing there isn't too much info about master cyliners on here. In addition to leaking rear seals i have a feeling it's time for a new master cylinder since it's getting harder to stop lately and since we just purchased a pop up trailer I want to make sure i can stop!

I've heard that Centric is awful so I'm wondering what brand I should go with. A-1 Cardone? Obvioulsy buying new and not refurb.

Have you bled the air and old fluid out from the lines first?

I do all my own maintenance and bleeding the brake fluid is the easiest thing, easier then changing the motor oil! Requires two people though.

I just bought a 4runner about 2 weeks ago, and below is what the brake fluid looked like when I bled it about 2 days ago.
Brake fluid should have a very light canola oil color or vegetable oil. After bleeding all the old fluid out I have much better pedal feel.

A bottle of brake fluid is about $5 at Walmart for a big quart, the best method is to use some sort of plastic syringe (baby medicine feeder) and suck the old fluid out of the brake reservoir before bleeding them. Then top it off with fresh fluid and then begin bleeding the brakes.

As for your rear seals? What do you mean by this? Rear seals at the master cylinder or rear seals at the axle or rear seals at the calipers?

Remove your master cylinder from the brake booster without loosening the brake lines (just enough to look behind the flange of the master cylinder). If there is fluid or signs of leakage, your master cylinder needs the pistons replacing most likely. If not, your problem lies elsewhere.

As for your rear seals? What do you mean by this? Rear seals at the master cylinder or rear seals at the axle or rear seals at the calipers?

Sorry about the confusion. Rear axle seals not related at all to the master cylinder. Just have multiple issues going in with the beast!

Thanks for the replies. I'll go ahead and pull the cylinder and check for leakage. If that's fine then I'll bleed the system with new fluid. After that is it possible that it's the brake booster? I know they usually make a funny noise when they go bad and I haven't heard that yet

You know I've been told that over time the brake fluid collects Water, condensation, humidity, something of the likes. Anyways, this water in the lines makes so the compression rate isn't as high as the fluid and feels soft, it makes sense to me but then again someone could be pulling my leg along with this dam blinker fluid I bought:wacko:

Also, have you done the 231 upgrade? I've done his and am amazed how fast and smooth I can slow down. I mean you can just feel those suckers grab and really impress you, then wonder why Toyota didn't put the tundra brakes on the 4Runner to begin with.

Some only have single/double piston systems. The stock 4runner quad piston calipers are wonderful, the Tundra brakes are even better.
Just take a look at Dodge brakes in 1997 vs Toyotas... Toyota obviously had the upper hand.

Yeah but the problem with the 4Runner front breaks really isn't the quad piston calipers as you put it but the disc, that dam thing would just heat up to easily and warp.m don't matter how many piston in the caliper you have if the disc can't take the heat buddy!

I have done the tundra upgrade and the braking power really didn't improve much. Major thing I noticed was the death wobble associated with the thin rotors was eliminated.
