One of my neighbors has a 1999 SR5 4x4 5speed manual with a rear locker for sale for $5k. The vehicle is extremely clean and has 214k miles. He has all the maintenance records and everything is up to date. I just sold our 2003 Sequoia at the end of last year with 200k because it was starting to nickle and dime me with things wearing out. I want the 4runner but am not sure I want to get into a vehicle with this mileage again due to the constant things that wear out. What do you guys think?

that's a great price for a well wanted runner.

But owning an older 4runner is a hands on task. Things ARE going to wear out.
right now as it sits it will most probably need to springs/shocks just to start you off.

Check out the 3rd gen buyers guide if you haven't already... lots of good info in there, with advice on what to look for. 3rd gens hold value, so I'm not surprised by the price, but maybe someone with more recent buying experience can chime in on the cost. As for things wearing out... check his records for lower ball joint replacement... if he has replaced them, check to make sure it was a toyota part that was used. Check for rust. I'm from VT and have a different level of tolerance than what those out west do... But surface rust on the rear diff is ok, and normal. Check when the last time the timing belt was replaced... its a good idea to change it with the water pump every 60-80K. Leaky valve covers are pretty common too. I've had them on both my 3rd gens, but haven't cared enough/ they didn't leak enough for me to fix it. Oh, and check the rear axle seal for leaks, or if he has had axle seal leaks in the past(look for oil streaks inside rear wheels). If he has had one recently... be prepared to fix it again. If not, after those kind of miles, its most likely won't happen. I've had a third gen since 1997, for a 4X4, they are extremely reliable and low cost to own (except for the whole mod thing!!). Good luck

On second thought, if you got rid of your Sequoia because you were sick of paying to replace worn parts, what makes you think a 214k mile 4runner will be any different?

A 4runner with 200+ miles is gonna be a project. They're dependable, sure, but things are gonna wear out left and right. Buy a new car if you don't want to be 'nickeled and dimed'

And be sure to tell your neighbor to post it here in the classifieds. :p

Price is pretty fair if its clean imo but i never pay asking price. I say hit hit at $4000 if all is good and let the haggle process begin. Clean 3rd gens with 3.4l 4x4 5spd with e locker are hard to find and its a 99 which will have the tall spring another plus. If you dont want to repair and maintain an older vehicle then a 3rd gen is not for you, they are getting old an will need some love. Make repairs or make payments, i find repairs are cheaper. New cars need maintenance and do need repairs also.

Honestly when I bought my 4runner I looked on craigslist for 8 months all up and down california for a 5spd 4x4 with E-locker. Never found one, hell it was hard enough to find a 5spd 4wd. I ended up getting an automatic 4x4 with no locker, but it only had 75k on it. If you can get it for maybe 4k lets say, you can put that extra thousand dollars into preventative maintenance and id be willing to bet that it'd be good for quite a while. Best of luck to you no matter what your choice is, I can see both sides!

Jump on it! Hell, in Texas you should have little to no rust. The 5-speed with e-locker is a pretty rare find - extremely rare to find it well-maintained and in good condition.

You will always have to repair a vehicle.. but it sure beats the hell out of a monthly car payment!
