1999 SR5: Small Leak At The Oil Drain Plug

So I'm guessing that one of my local shops or jiffy lubes may have stripped my oil drain plug a bit because i've had a slow leak for a few months now and finally identified the source this weekend. My driveway is now oil-stained and the wife is a bit irritated so I guess it's time to fix it. Do I need to buy a new oil pan or can I pick up a new oil drain plug from my local dealer and have the pain threads re-tapped? I've replaced the plug ring with a new one and that didn't help.

You can probably just get away with a new drain plug. Usually they make the drain plug strip out before the pan will.

I would try that first being the cheapest and easiest way.

I agree, get a new plug and several new oil plug gaskets for future oil changes. The oil change places always leave the old gaskets on there.

The oil pan drain plug has an attached washer on it. If over tightened, the washer will "Mushroom" and cause a leak. There probley is not anything striped, but you do probley need a new drain plug.

Toyota oil drain plugs do not have washers as part of the plug. it is 2 seperate pieces, but most quick service oil change places do not replace the washers in addition to overtightening the plugs which does kill the washers. As far as determining if thereads are messed up on the plug or the pan, a new plag would be a cheap way to test it, but make sure you install it with a new washer
