Location: Minneapolis, MN (the truck, not me - I'm now in CA)
I am considering selling my 1999 Toyota 4Runner Highlander Edition that I left back home in MN. It's a rare model that came with 1" taller springs, color-keyed bumpers, low-profile fender flares, etc. This model is a 3.4L V6 4WD Automatic - 161,5xx miles currently. Sorry, no factory locker option on this one. It starts and idles like new, very quiet truck.
I bought it a little over three years ago with 123,000 miles on it. At the time, it was essentially a one-owner vehicle (originally a lease return), then owned by the same family from ~50k miles to the time I bought it at 123k. Luckily for me, the previous/original owner decided to invest in an OEM timing belt, water pump & tensioner along with some other minor work just before he sold it to me (literally 500 miles before).
Since I've owned it, I have performed nearly every major type of maintenance or repair needed on a vehicle - approaching $5,000 in repairs, maintenance and upgrades. I love this truck, it's simply a beast off-road and pretty smooth on the highway. I've driven it over 1,100 miles to Washington DC when I moved there, and 1,100 miles back without a hitch.
However if you look up the problems these trucks can be prone to, I have literally dealt with every major one. Here's a breakdown of what I've invested into this truck in the last 10,000 miles.
- Transmission & transfer case replaced with a used OEM unit out of an identical 1999 3.4L V6 4Runner with 49k original miles
- Aftermarket radiator (OEM unit suffered "strawberry milkshake" at 150k miles and I had to replace the transmission above)
- OEM alternator (brand-new)
- OEM starter (85k miles)
- AutoZone battery (just put it in 2 days ago - 12/20/12)
- New brakes all around (pads/rotors up front, new rear drum shoes)
- Rear axle seals & diff fluids serviced
- Rear main seal replaced when new transmission was put in
- Full tune-up (PCV, plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, TB cleaned, etc)
- MAF sensor replaced
- Monroe Sensatrac rear shocks installed (fronts still OEM, rides fine)
- Alignment after brake job
- 16" Cragar Soft 8 wheels with BFG 265/75/16 tires all around (10k miles to date) *BONUS: matching Cragar & BFG spare (brand-new!) in OEM location
- Westin-style nerf bars replaced the OEM running boards...I also have OEM front mudguards not yet installed.
- Pioneer AVIC-D3 navigation deck
- Polk 6.5" component speakers up front
- Polk 6.5" or 5.25" coaxial rear speakers (can't remember, whatever OEM was is what I installed)
- Q-Logic custom sub enclosure with Rockford Fosgate 10" sub (replaces cargo cover location, looks stock)
- Kenwood KAC-859 5-channel amp (pretty old, suggest an eBay replacement for $50)
- Proper Monster Cable & speedwire installed (somewhat clean, could be tucked more)
This truck runs very well, and I see no reason why it can't make it to 300,000 miles and more. It needs a little love, here are my suggestions:
- The passenger side valve cover gasket has a minor leak, which is dripping oil on the the exhaust manifold. It's a very small drip, but valve cover gaskets are something that should be replaced.
- The steering wheel is very worn out from the sun and general usage. Aftermarket factory replacements can be had online for $100 or less.
- The rear window doesn't slide down anymore. I think there is a bad ground or an issue with the rear window switch. All other windows and the sunroof work perfectly.
- There is a little rust on the rear bumper as is common with these trucks, and surface rust on the undercarriage. Overall the body itself is clean.
- The brakes are a bit mushy at first, and may need a brake fluid flush as I think there's still air in the lines. Another option recommended for this truck is the Tundra brake upgrade - maybe $300 in parts or less.
Overall, this truck is extremely valuable to me and many others. I have been relocated to San Francisco for a new job, and had to decide between taking my truck or my Supra - guess which Toyota is out there with me.
Clean Minnesota title in hand, no liens and in my name. I don't need the money, but I don't REALLY need the truck out in Cali or sitting at my parent's house in MN...so I'm just going to throw it out there and see who's interested.
