199mm will fit in Split 3 Spoke with no modifications......

First the title is for those who were not sure that the 199mm will fit. I could not find anybody that had done this upgrade and done not modifications. So this is some of the pictures i took while doing the 199mm brake upgrade. I went with the 199mm because i didn't want to do any modifications to the stock rims or have to wheel spacers.

This is my buddy whose arm I twisted to help me.

I've always thought people went with the 199mm instead of the 231mm if they had the 16 inch split spokes because there were no clearance issues. Not sure on that, though, as I haven't done much research on it. Congrats on the upgrade. I wish I could afford it, as that's one of my pet peeves with my 3rd gen. Sometimes it feels like it just doesn't want to stop.

How far are you from Raleigh? I have a complete 199mm set up for sale from my wrecked runner for cheap...

That is awesome news ! Thanks for guinea-piggin that one and clarifying the split-spoke fitment issue! Now I don't have to look for new wheels and just go 199mm. :bigok:
 
:thanks: Yea no problem! The are very close....but ill get a pic of them inside the rim soon. We just had a guy quit our group so we are a man short for a while and the hours will be crazy....in fact I am at work right now about to help work on a phone system!!! :keyboard: ......oh and it will stop on a dime now!

I have the same split 3 spoke wheels and went with the 199mm upgrade too but needed to install wheel spacers. Hmm weird. I guess it's hit or miss whether or not it'll fit without modification.

To 96743runner and the OP, what brand of caliper did you use?

I ended up getting the Duralast calipers from AutoZone. If you get things from them be sure the pressure fittings in them are in good shape! the drivers side was defective and it took my buddy and I almost a week with the runner on jack stands to figure out it was a defective caliper..... :mad:

and 96743runner it might have something to do with the difference in year model mine is a 2000 SR5.....

Also i need to thank duckhunter71 for talking me into getting the 4Runner! :biggrin2:

To be honest, I don't know. On my sales receipt they don't state the brand but I bought them from an auto parts store in town ("Automotive Supply Center").

If I remember I'll try calling them and ask for the brand but for now here's a pic if that helps any...

And for anyone who is interested here is a pic of the 1/4'' wheel spacers that I had to use to clear the split 3 spoke rims..

I wouldn't recommend using a spacer like this long-term though. It caused a lot of front end vibrations and the steering wheel pulled to the left with these things on. For me they were a temporary fix until I got my 5 star rims, which easily clear these calipers.
 
i was under the same impression that the 199 will fit without any modification. it is the heat shield that becomes an issue? if so, thats what cutters are for!

if anyone knows, let us know! thanks.

I wonder if the reason you had to use the spacer was because of the difference in year model between yours and mine......something to think about

and also mine are Duralast from AutoZone (O'Reilly didn't carry them)

I just did the Tundra brake upgrade on my 1997 SR5 with the six spoke 16" wheels. No interference and the operation was a complete bolt up with the exception of grinding the dust shield for caliper clearance ! It has made a noticeable improvement in braking performance !
