1GRE- FE head gasket was redesigned when?

150k on my '04 and I just found out last week that I have one of these $2k HG jobs to look forward to in the near future, except on mine it was the #2 cylinder misfiring in the morning.
No known overheats or prior issues with this vehicle. Previous owner took immaculate care of her and had records of all recommended maintenance done at the dealership -- at the correct mileage intervals, even.
Some of us just have bad luck, I guess.
What were the symptoms? How'd you diagnose the issue?

Sorry if I'm getting a little off-topic, but to answer the questions:
Started with a misfire in the morning that would clear out and run fine after 15 or 20 seconds. After about a week of that it started throwing the MIL during cold starts (P0302 - cylinder #2 misfire). Very slowly losing a small amount of coolant.
Took it into a trusted mechanic (the Dr. House of the automotive world, if you ask me) and had him do everything he could to make sure it wasn't what we thought it was. But it was.
I don't have the $2k to blow on it right now, so he threw in a bottle of some weird radiator sealer (not block seal, I didn't want to permanently gunk everything up) made from ginger root or some junk -- seriously. Topped everything off and it's been running fine for a couple of weeks now... We'll see how long it holds.

I don't think many people are arguing that its completely due to overheating, but rather that overheating an aluminum sleeved block typically does lead to head gasket issues. I agree that its more likely a design defect based on all the evidence, but its all fairly circumstantial without a large amount of testing, verification, ect. In a court it'd be strong, but still probably circumstantial.
Its probably what GM used for a while, I've used it in my vehicle in the past its essentially crushed ginger root. The fibrous material soaks up and expands in the gaps to seal it up. Its really a temporary solution, but sometimes it lasts a long time. I'd still repair the vehicle when you have enough money/time.

That's funny, I thought the guy was joking when he first told me it was made from ginger root. How long did it last in your experience? It's definitely a temporary fix, but I'm hoping to at least get 6 months to a year out of it so I can save the cash for a real repair.
Your co-worker is an idiot. That VW engine is going to cost him an arm and a leg to fix up.

Blown Head Gasket pics?
Noticed it was a little low on coolant, no signs of overheating, so added a bit. Then noticed a drip on the garage floor. So crawled underneath and found the like coming form want likes the head gasket. Pics are form the underneath passenger side look up, front of the car would be towards the bottom of the picture?
pulled the dip stick and the oil looks normal.
What do you think?

I've been searching the forums far and wide and I've seen a lot of people with head gasket issues, specifically the 2003, 04, and 05.
I know that there is a thread going about the issue already, but this thread will purely be about taking action. I have an 04 with 170k miles that runs perfect but there is a small head gasket leak and toyota wants 2500 plus just to do the gasket. I have called the head quarters and talked to the supervisor and she is not willing to help out (understandable, they lose money). What she did say though, is that enough people take action and call them with the same issue they will look into creating a recall or extended warranty.
The main goal is to flood them with calls until they take some form of action. If only a few people do it, it wont make much of a difference but if everyone effected takes action, I honestly think they may help out. They also said that if they get enough calls, they will contact all owners that have had issues within a certain vin range and reimburse them for previous head gasket work.
Their number is 800-331-4331 it only took me a few minutes and I asked to talk to the supervisor. I recommend you do the same to make a bigger impact.
