1st gear

Hello again. My 2001, 4runner, when I come to a stop, the trans doesn't shift to 1st. I have to shift into neutral or reverse then shift back to Drive. To get into 1st. Or I can hit the accelerator and with a gnarly thud as the trans drops to 1st, the truck moves forward.

Dirty screen filter, dirty fluid, bad solenoid and or transmission failing.

When was the last time the fluid was exchanged . Screen filter replaced and the pan magnets cleaned?

I believe the solenoids control the shifting. Never a good thing if the transmission is not shiting properly

What's the transmission fluid level?

Your line pressure might be low. You have electronic control versus the earlier year kick down cable. If you have access to the FSM there might be a procedure. Hopefully some one with a 2001-2002 can help.

Yes, there's two solenoids that control all gear shifts and a third for torque converter lockup. Bad fluid or lack of flow due to clogging could create these symptoms.

What happens when you manually shift down to L? Does it go into 1st? If it does, that it could be the solenoid, clogged filter or low/bad fluid.

If it still doesn't downshift, something mechanical is messed up in the tranny.

This is a stretch, but, what is your TPS at idle cold and hot? I agree on the solenoids however…..

If your TPS changes when the TB warms up I can see the PCM thinking your still depressing the throttle pedal
