Hello,
I got my 1988 4runner a few weeks back as my first car. It runs, drives great, and has the V6. I was thinking about doing a 3" body lift can anyone tell me where i can get a cheap lift kit? I also need decals so can anybody tell me where i can get these.

This guy has them but they're pretty expensive. They are cheaper though than Toyota was originally.

Do some searching on 3" body lifts. IMO I would not go above 1" on a body lift. At 3" you will need to extend the shifter and find a way to cover the gaps between the body and chassis. And the bumper looks funny on a 3". I don't mean to insult those that have them.

You will find a wealth of info by using the search buttons here and you can read up on nearly anything you want to do. Another trick is to go to google and do an image search. This guy has some great cheap mod ideas, and he sells body lifts. I got the seat lifts from him very quickly and they were easy to install:

Are you really 14? I'm very impressed. You need to come to VA and kick start my 15 year old on our '89 4Runner project. His 13 year old brother is more interested than he is!

A 3 inch body lift is a lot, and you'll have to do more than just throw some spacers in there. The 4Crawler site that Nervo linked can sell you a good body lift for cheap, but read up on it first.

Are you lifting for looks, or bigger tires, or what? I think you have "first truck" syndrome (don't worry, all of us did too). Welcome to the site.

Thank you for letting me know about the body lift. But do you think i can squeeze bigger tires on just as is? Ahh yeah that's how it is with my brother he got a car at 14 and waited about a year to start doing any work.

I was going to put bigger tires on but now that I look again there is enough clearance. You're probably right so I'll wait till I earn some more money and see if I still wanna put a lift on it.

I'd recommend ball joint spacers and 5" rear shackles.

Body lifts aren't always bad, but I'm not convinced that they're the first thing to do when you're just looking to clearance bigger tires. I think BigBluePile is right on, a set of balljoint spacers and some longer leaf shackles in back should give you just enough lift to clear and stuff most 33" tires. Some guys get away with rocking 33s stock, others get rub, it really depends on what brand you pick and what condition your stock springs are in I suppose.

One thing with 33s is you'll definitely take a performance hit with stock gearing. If you go that big, you're going to want to regear.

Meaning your MPG will suffer as well as your acceleration. Also your speedometer will be off but you can adjust it.

My rear leafs are almost flat and 10.5 x 31 tires fit fine on the 15" wheels I had. I see them used a lot on craigslist sold by Jeep people so there is a plentiful supply. As Kid says, a lot of people manage 33's with no or very little lift. I'm pretty sure my flat springs would not have worked with them.
