1st Gen only forum .. please?

One forum for 1st Gens (Classic T4R's)
One forum for 2nd Gens (2nd Gen forum)

I mean, technically, no vehicle is a classic until it's over 20 years old .. yes?

... so most 2nd Gens are not "Classics" yet anyway ..

I want a forum which only centers on model years 1984 thru 1989.

No, there aren't.

Besides, they're practically the same truck. Lots of tech applies to both, it makes sense to have them in the same place.

they are not the same truck, thats like saying t100 and a tacoma is the same truck just cause they have the same 3.4l

And the same transmissions, and transfer cases, and front end suspensions... they're mechanically similiar enough to justify sharing a forum.

The amount of work required in creating another forum in the PHPBB2 software will take about ten minutes so it's not a matter of work. Breaking up the current "Classic" forum area and separating the old posts into two new categories would take a long, LONG time though.

Personally I would like to see this breakdown because these are different vehicles and I'm personally not interested in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, et al generations of 4Runners - only 1st.

When I owned a 2nd gen, I hung out over there much more. I wandered over here when I purchased a 4th gen. If you want to go to a forum that has a larger 1st gen members, head there.

I always thought it was pretty stupid that there was one subforum for both generations. Arguably, there's more info on those trucks because they've been around longer.

Most say that it's due to a lack of traffic that we have one subforum, but I disagree. Look at Yotatech... they have tons of early 4Runner owners. They must have come across T4R and thought, "Who wants to post in a subforum dedicated to two gens? I want a specific forum for my truck!" That's why the "Classic" T4R forum goer probably went to YT or another forum.

I bet that there would be a huge population of 1st and 2nd gen owners on T4R had they actually had their own subforums.

Yotatech has a forum for 84 to 85 trucks/runners, and 86 to 95 trucks/runners. They split their forums based on the front suspension, not between 1st/2nd gen.

Discounting the body, the difference between these trucks is one has a removable hardtop, the other has coil springs in the rear. I'm not aware of any other significant difference.

Alright, upon more serious contemplation, since my 1988 has Independent Front Suspension and the V6 as an option, I suppose my model year as well as the 1989 model year, are a kind of "1st Gen/2nd Gen Hybrid" ..

But I still vote for the Classic T4R forum to be divided.
No need to move threads, just open a fresh forum for '84 thru '89.

Although may be true, please remember that Yotatech is a million years OLDER than this forum...so, it could easily explain the vast more members on early model 4runners. Their resources/info on early 4runners are much more than us...just as we have more info/members on later model 4runner than them. And in all likelihood, those that do search out early 4runner model forums would run across Yotatech than this forum on GOOGLE search.

In addition, to be honest, this forum was created at the time when there were already plenty of forums dedicated to older 4runners (Yotatech, Pirate, and one other that escapes my mind at this time). This forum was created to focus mostly on 4th gen and up because there was a "need" at the time for a modern 4runner forum. Therefore, the older 4runner models were not focused on and thus, relegated to one-fit-all subforum.

I agree with you all that more division may make it more attractive to older 4runner owners...but it also depends on the amount of volume. Otherwise, you're looking at a ghost town/subforum! Glad i don't have to lose sleep over this as a forum leader anymore!

That does seem like very logical reasoning. I was not aware that Yotatech had that many years on us T4R members.

Good thing I've got a 3rd gen, lol.

BTW, I'm at work now, so I left a note on my buddy's desk and he should hopefully get back to me tomorrow about that GLK Bluetec info. Not surprising that I wasn't able to get any information about it from any of the salesmen or call center representatives.

I kind of agree with this (except on the 'classic' thing, going by the 20-year measure 1990 and 1991 trucks would fall under that category), the 1st and 2nd Gens do have drivetrain similarities, but are very different trucks aside from that.

The 1st Gen is the bas**** child of the classic Toyota small truck and the fledgling North American love of the SUV. I don't have to go over the history for people on this forum I hope, but a 1st Gen. is basically a pickup with rear seats and a factory cap.

The 2nd Gen. has a purpose built body, reworked suspension and significantly different styling to the 90-95 pickups, it's clearly designed as a passenger vehicle 1st and foremost and in fact, it lacks versatility (compared to the 1st gen) because of this.

I like both generations, and if I ever find another 2 door 2nd. gen within my means I will buy it and keep it forever, but I think that there is good enough reason to do what SUBTEGRAL suggests.
