1st Gen Rear seat belts

Once my son jumped in the back seat and I noticed the old lap belt I was hoping there was a better belt. It appears Toyota just never finished the job. Once I did some research and looked over the belt and roll bar mount points it was clear the mod would be fairly clean.
There were several older threads of folks adding the 3 point belt using the roll bar mount for the lap belt retractor and the shoulder mount. I spent a couple hours at the local pick a part and found the retractors and all of the small accessories. I still need to find a good fitting cover.

I'm actually looking to do this now. I'm tempted to just get some new aftermarket stuff from Wesco. I've used their stuff before.

Given the prices for the used Toyota stuff on eBay, getting a brand new aftermarket belt with a covered retractor seems like the way to go.

I guess it depends how much of a stickler one is for originality.

That said, I'm swapping from burgundy to gray interior, and I plan to track down the correct front gray Toyota belts because of the cover that fits into the side panel.

You should be able to find all of the Toyota hardware (used ) for ~ $50.

Most of the write ups say get front shoulder belts from similar year trucks. I used shoulder belts from a 1993 pickup in my 1st gen. Just so you expand your potential donors. You should be able to get them off eBay cheap enough. The one time I looked to have factory seat belts replaced they were like $400 from the dealer (Honda).

This auction is for one side. The seller has both sides in separate auctions. I think I paid about $35 for both so prices are rising.

Yeah, first I used parts from a second gen 4Runner but retractor did not have a cover. Then I found same year truck with cover for retractor so I switched to that.

Problem either way is that the belt is too long so it's got slack now.

I remember seeing from either this forum or yotatech where someone used belt from a Subaru and did not have the slack.

I had to cut both sides too. My wife has a very nice sewing machine that does a real nice job sewing the webbing material. I see you're in SoCal, like neighbors. I'm sure I can talk her into a couple more.

I've always kinda wanted shoulder belts for my 1st gen's backseat. Being in the backseat in a crash sounds like a world of hurt

As far as comfort goes I'm wondering if the locking function or the shoulder mount is the same as the waist. You know the click click click of the waist belt that I'm talking about. It sucks when you have a full bladder

I have a set of front seat belts from an '86 and no rear seat anymore....go figure......Never thought anyone would want to buy them.

that would be me. used rear belts from a '95 legacy. exact fit, using subaru hardware, which fit the toyota mount points. no slack in belts, but no covers for the retractors. i can live with that. also used the subaru middle belt (might as well have it in there).

You guys could then do parachute work for skydiving in Lake Elsinore
I have a parachute rigger friend with equipment so I'll ask him to help when I get back to the seatbelt project.
