a less restrictive stock replacement will be good enough , if you are looking for more sound you can get a turbo style or throw down some more for a Flowmaster or Magnaflow , and for not much more you can do a total 2.25 cat back exhaust

I used a Magnflow 2.5" in and out. I am very happy with the sound and performance.

Finally got around the getting this taken care of...
Muffler guy quoted me $160 installed for a Magnaflow with new exhaust pipes. When they inspected the cat, they could see right through it, so the bill grew to $300 for a complete 2.5" install with new Magnaflow cat and exhaust.
It's a huge improvement over the previous condition. I no longer shut it down in drivethroughs in an attempt to save embarrassment.

Mine's a 22R-E.
It was a busy week:
1) Wed am - replaced sketchy T-stat;
2) Wed pm - exhaust system;
3) Thur pm - cleaned intake and injection;
4) Fri noon - corrected idle (high idle; brake causing pulsing);
5) Fri pm - passed emissions.
I don't feel a significant power difference, but it sure seems to spin up RPMs faster than before!
Before all this work:
a) it wasn't warming up properly (and heater wouldn't work);
b) it was obnoxiously noisy;
c) it stunk;
d) I had to register at an alternate address because of failed emissions.
All of those are now corrected. The truck drives better and is much more pleasant (no stink/noise) to be around. I'll post photos and a more complete writeup with photos when I get a chance.

most power gains in older vehicles like ours isn't because of a magic muffler or exhaust system. They are from old parts that have lived their full life and just need replaced. Over time they build up carbon and soot, that being said a leaky exhaust can be just as bad for performance. Any leak within 18 inches of an o2 will cause it to read lean and add unnecessary fuel that kill performance and plug up your exhaust over time. Hope this helps you, basically I'd spend as little on possible on a big name muffler when flowmaster's copyright has been outdated and you can buy a thrush welded for half the price and all the baffles are in the exact same spot.

a full exhaust is worth the money. I did a headman header 40 series flomaster and a 18 inch resinator with 2.5 inch pipes and it ran me $550.
