I would assume several people either have questions about, or solid answers/ideas for how to keep your first gen. 4runners secure when you have the top off. As a long time owner and lover off top off driving, I have always been curious what others do for security. I don't happen to live in the greatest neighborhood, but also love having the top off during the summer and spring. It is likely that a popsicle stick would turn my ignition, and I sure would hate to see my runner rolling away without me behind the steering wheel. Any suggestions for security overall??

I owned a Jeep Wrangler for a number of years & never really had any issues with leaving the top down. Worst thing that ever happened was some moron thought it'd be funny to dump his ice cream cone out on my seat.
Generally I never kept anything in the rig that was worth stealing. I also used a steering wheel club.
Another option might be an alarm although I hate those things. A kill switch might help but those won't stop a thief from trashing your ignition first. That's why I like the club option. Thief sees that & moves onto easier targets before he even touches your rig.

I never leave anything inside the truck that I am not willing to part with.
I also have a 67 Impala convertible.
You can learn from experience, or from others.
Never lock a convertible.
You would rather have the theif take what is inside than have him cut your top to unlock the door, then take what he wants.
Otherwise you just added another $600 or so to the cost of what ever he took.
As far as a questionable neighborhood, the club would probably be the best / cheapest bet to keep your truck yours.

i have a soft topper on my '88.
i replaced the stock steering wheel with a grant wheel and removable steering wheel kit.

i honestly can't remember... let's say between $250 and $300.
i believe i got the wheel and the other bits from kragen.com. i found a coupon and was able to use it.

Oh yeah I forgot. I also ran a Steadfast steering column armored collar on my Wrangler. Basically its a hardened steel wrap that's permanently installed on the steering column & around the ignition. That was nice because once installed you can forget about it. Nothing extra to lock or take with you. I'm not sure if they make them for 4Runners though.

I agree. That damn center console does nothing for me. I already leave nothing in the truck and out in my fenced back yard. I have the back padlocked and chained, so hopefully all will be well!
i am definitely going to look into getting a removable wheel set-up though.

i bought one!
