While out off-roading in my 4th gen, I met some 1st gen owners. Here is one of them getting his front-end airborne:

First Post! I've been poking around for awhile trying to pick up tips here and there and I finally picked up an '89 3.0 5-speed last night. I really wanted an auto but I couldn't pass up the price I got this one for.
She needs some work, some of which I know about, and some that i am sure to find. Plans are to get her stripped down on the inside so I can get in and take a good look, then start the list. Not gonna try to make her pretty, just want something to teach the boys how to "wrench" and take on some camping trips.

psh i love my auto. once i regear it will be even better lol
with an auto, you get a lower geared t-case so in 4 low you crawl slower than any stock 5 speed. this saves me from having to get 4.7 or dual case

Thats actually a good point, the auto does help you crawl, but not because of the gearing, The transmissions 1st gear is higher than the MT, but the t-case on the auto is a little lower, not much though.

Also, you cant do 4.7s or dual cases with the a340h, like you can with the 4cyl auto tranny.

I plan on running the 5-speed for as long as I can. Once it gets to a point that it needs a rebuild or replace, I'll hopefully have some time with it to decide which way to go.

Anyone else have a 1st gen with 2 door handles inside on the passenger side that both work?

Both of my passenger side door handles work. What I find interesting is that your 88 has a wing window.

Yup. I don't think I've seen a gen1 that didn't have two passenger door handles. The rear one is so somebody sitting in the back seat (ie, my 6 y/o) can open the door.
My 88 has a wing window too.

That is very interesting. fl3xforc3r3d and I have almost the exact same 4runner color, auto, miles, year and SR5, difference is he has a wing window. :lol:

just remove the panel and see if the plastic clips on each end of the rod are broken. common issue. most likely the plastic clip at the handle is/are broken. you can just buy the clip. pretty cheap and easy repair

You know that guy is taking a beating. Those 1st gens ride stiff!

My T-bars are cranked and it rides like it has wooden wheels and no suspension on it. Good thing I'm not old!
