basically as teh title states. I am in the marked for a blower and am wondering what the differences are. looks wise i would prefer the 2nd gen but are there mechanical or reliability reasons why i should get one over the other?

The newer or current supercharger kit uses a single casting for the supercharger housing and plenum. It is based on the newer 4th generation Eaton supercharger. It differs from the 3rd generation mostly in respect to the bypass valve. In the 4th generation the supercharger body has the bypass valve cast into the supercharger body where on the 3rd generation it was a separate part that had to be plumbed into the works some how. This saves space and allows a more compact installation so it can be fitted to more applications. Magnuson has taken this to the extreme and made the supercharger body, bypass valve, and plenum all one casting to make for a very compact installation. Some people get confused thinking that the new supercharger is a totally different supercharger. It really is not. It is still an Eaton M-62, 62 cubic inch supercharger. Magnuson has really done a fantastic job on the second version. The layout and casting is very well thought out and still uses all the factory connections and cables. The newer one is easier to install saving on installation time and confusion.

Two reasons I can think of:
The 2nd gens are newer meaning that they likely have less wear and tear on them. Also with the black 2nd gens it is easy to change the lube in the nose drive as the unit is installed right side up, as opposed to upside down like the 1st gens. I have to remove my blower in order to change out the oil (which is why it hasn't been done in ~140K :( .
Other than that, the blowers are both Eaton M62 roots-type blowers delivering the same performance.
On the other hand, you can probably pick up a 1st gen for cheaper.

Yeah, i read this too. I guess i just want to make sure that that there were no issues with the mechanics of the housing or the plumbing of it, as the individual below was talking about. The one for sale is claimed to have approx. 50k miles on it, but they haven't made those in 13 years so im not sure what to think or if i am getting a good deal

i read somewhere that the 1st and 2nd gen pulley sizes are different, thus putting out more psi with the 1st gen since it has a smaller pulley. any info or specs on this exactly? cant find anything definitive. im going to be rodering the urd pulley and am not sure if i should go with the 2.2 or the 2.1. ???

Stock pulleys are the same size. The PSI rating is the same for both of them as well

As for the smaller pulley, do you have fuel upgrades? what is the elevation where you are? I would not put on a smaller pulley without fuel upgrades unless you live at higher elevations.

i live around sea level, but am ordering the 7th injector either way this week and figured i would toss in a tensioner and pulley from URD. Do you know what the outputs are with the 2.2 and 2.1 pulley? the URD website does not say exactly. with the 7th injector, would you recommend adding one for a bit more power? thanks for the help! :cowboy:

Stock pulley is going to boost 6-7psi. 2.2 pulley will boost 8-9psi and the 2.1 should do 9-10psi

If you are looking for some more power on top of the approximately 40hp that the 7th injector gives you, then yes the smaller pulleys should work nicely. Just remember, URD's base fuel and timing map is configured for the stock pulley so you will most likely have to do some tuning when you add a smaller pulley.

ah, thank you again, very good to know! especially since i will be installing the injector myself and driving it to someone to tune. i might install it with the stock pulley and then slap on the smaller one at the shop before they tune it. crucial, many thanks!

Good points. Also Magnusion no longer makes the first gen nose cone, they have to modify and adapt a GM nose cone. They can fix and rebuild the first gen but it's more expensive.

I would choose the 2nd gen just because it's easier to service (and it looks better), but I have the first gen and it works fine. No matter what gen you get you’ll be happy!

I havent been able to find any actual dyno numbers for the 5vz with both the 7th injector and a smaller pulley, anyone have any ideas of realistic WHP numbers i can expect to see with the 7th and either 2.2 or 2.1 pulley? cant wait to call URD in the morning and order these goodies!!! :girl:

The general rule of thumb for superchargers is that 1 psi increase in boost is approximately equal to 10hp at the crank. Therefore, the 2.2 should add about 15-20hp at the crank.

haha, was JUST looking at it, lol! didnt see the part about how to add for the additional psi though. so the 2.1 pulley should add maybe 40-45 more??? wow! i've noticed most people going with the 2.2, is there an issue with lack of fuel again if you push it up to ~10psi???
