Lets see where to begin. In the town I live in there is a ring of thefts that prey on 80's model 4runners. They then proceed to strip them down quickly and ship the parts and pieces out. I joined this forum in hopes to find others in oregon like myself that has had this happen to them and understands how serious it is. If you are one of the many people who relate to this i'm interested in knowing how many of you 4runner owners are fed up with worrying if your rig will get stolen today. Even if this subject dosnt apply to you personally, i would like to hear your thoughts on the subject as well. I will appreciate your feedback.

No doubt about it, messing with another person's vehicle (whatever it may be) is one of the nastiest crimes there is--why do you think they used to immediately HANG horse thieves back in the old west?! That's someone's access to freedom of movement, their ability to go where they want, when they want. Plus, it's their expression of their personality. Sorry to hear about your troubles out there, 4rnergirl. Hope they catch the @#$%@#$%'s and fry 'em.

Yes, an alarm is a great idea along with other security measures which i do have but there are others out there that are not aware of the situation. I just decided to somehow alert/inform people and at the same time try to find a solution. It dos'nt hurt to try. in response to are they driving them away or tow? they are doing both

Yeah I see CL ads all the time in the Portland Metro area where people are explaining that their 1gen 4runner has been stolen and they have a reward out for it.

The NW is Toyota Territory. Countless times i have seen early toyota's upside down off the side of wheeling trails, stripped. We call the sheriff and they come out and run the vin. Then they usually pay us to get it to where the tow truck can load it. I would at least rig it up so it can't be started (pull the coil wire, secondary ignition switch under the dash, alarm, and park it somewhere that would be hard to tow it.

LOL I remember that.
I wish I had seen this before putting $ 15,000 in to my 88 4runner to restore it to mint condition and not spending 200.00 to protect it! It was stolen one and a half weeks after my sons 86 and recovered by accident three days ago destroyed! All that money put into it three months before it was stolen. I'm sick over it. But we are gonna start over fixing it back up.

Well it appears the toyota thief's are at it again. There have been 5 that I know of in the last week. I do not know if any members are here in grants pass Oregon. But if you are be aware. Lock em, club em, install some kill switches, get an alarm, change the locks if you can, keep it in the garage if you can. They will watch you, figure out your schedule. When the get the right timing your toyota will be gone. Most likely if you recover it, it 's already striped.

I know what you mean. I live near SE Portland (Theft Central). I got a couple tricks up my sleeve though when it comes to theft. The only ones I will mention on the internet openly include a steering wheel club and a .45acp on my hip. IMO, The steering wheel club is best because it is easily seen from the outside of the vehicle.

Go to any first gen in a junkyard. I bet your key will work in the ignition of at least half of them.
